Phononic Rogue Waves

Abstract. Colloquially speaking, a rogue wave is a wave that seems to "come from nowhere" and then "vanishes without a trace". While rogue waves in photonics and hydrodynamic settings are well studied, they are less understood in phononic systems (i.e., systems that concern pressure waves, such as mass-spring systems). In this talk, the formation of rogue waves in various nonlinear lattice equations is explored using asymptotic reductions and numerical simulations. The possibility of the experimental realization of phononic rogue waves will also be discussed.
