Nanoparticles at Workplaces: Hazards, exposure and control

26th – 28th of October 2021
Online course

About this course

The course will raise awareness of the nanoparticles (sources, recognition, toxicity and control) at different working environments. The focus will be on engineered nanoparticles/nanomaterials but also incidental nanoparticles appearing at many different work environments utilizing e.g. hot process and massive energies will be in concern.

Themes such as toxicity, exposure, risk assessment, control and legislation will be covered. With comprehensive lectures and practical hands on sessions, the course gives ability to understand the possible exposure to nanoparticles as well as improve the safety of the working manners and work environments.

Price information

The price of the course is EUR 50.

It is possible to pay by invoice and credit card.

Course objectives

The participants will:

  • understand the concepts of natural, incidental and engineered nanoparticles and their similarities and differences, basic behavior, sources and exposure scenarios
  • learn about the toxicity of nanoparticles and environment aspects based on the latest scientific findings
  • know how to recognize, assess and prevent the exposure for nanoparticles
  • be introduced to risk assessment methods with practical hands-on section
  • familiarize themselves with the current legislation and standards related to nanomaterials and exposure and learns about the foreseen development
  • be offered a foresight on the development of the nanoindustry and other advanced materials

Target groups

  • Occupational hygienists
  • Health and safety executives
  • Researchers
  • Authorities
  • Laboratory engineers

Subject background

Nanoparticles appear in many different work environments. First of all, worker’s may be exposed to incidental nanoparticles when working with e.g. industry with massive energies and high temperatures but also in office-like environments where e.g. 3D-printers are used. These incidental nanoparticles are still quite poorly distinguished at the workplaces. Nanoparticles may also be produced intentionally, i.e. engineered nanoparticles / engineered nanomaterials, which are utilized widely in different branches of industry.

There are scientific research studies available on both incidental and engineered nanoparticles. Those have also lot of common features, e.g. measurement techniques and risk control methods apply to both groups. Since the toxicity of the nanoparticles is not definitely known, prevention of exposure plays an important role when working with engineered nanomaterials
