In the World of COVID - Special Event to Celebrate International Translation Day

2020 has proved to be a year of great difficulty. It is only natural
that FIT has dedicated this year’s International Translation Day (ITD) to ‘finding the words for a world in crisis’. With COVID-19 restrictions, we are confined to our homes and prevented from carrying out normal business and social activities as we otherwise would.

What does this mean to interpreters whose daily practice relies heavily on the human contact we have with our clients? What challenges have been thrown at translators, who are commonly (though perhaps incorrectly) considered ‘introverts who never leave the house’? What difficulties have social distancing requirements brought to the industry as a whole? And what implications might these impacts have for our credentials?

If you are interested in any of these questions, please join AUSIT NSW in a special ITD event to discuss and search for answers with a dedicated panel.

Presenters

The panel is composed of Gary Harkins (Regional Operations Manager, NAATI NSW), Gordana Vasic (Manager, Health Care Interpreter Service), Rema Nazha ((Manager, Panel & Industry Development, Multicultural NSW), Cintia Lee (Practitioner Representative, Interpreter), and Marion Gevers (Practitioner Representative, Translator).

Gary Harkins is the Regional Operations Manager for NAATI NSW, the national standards and certifying authority for translators and interpreters in Australia. Gary directs and supports the delivery of Certification Testing in the region and through his engagement with industry bodies and educational institutions actively promotes the importance of the T&I profession in enabling people’s ability, through language, to engage and participate in Australian society. Gary is currently the secretary for the NSW RAC, a member of the Multicultural NSW Language Forum and delivers presentations to Universities and TAFE in NSW.

Gordana Vasic is the Manager of the Health Care Interpreter Service which comes under the Western Sydney Local Health District—the role she has held for ten years, having joined the Service in 2000. Gordana initially trained as a nurse, and later obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Agriculture at the University of Sarajevo. She then obtained NAATI accreditation as a Serbian Translator in 1999, and as a Serbian Interpreter in 2000. Gordana is very passionate about helping people who are not fluent in English to get equal access to services, especially in health.

Rema Nazha is the Manager of Panel and Industry Development at Multicultural NSW. Multicultural NSW implements the policy and legislative framework to support multicultural principles in NSW, including the provision of T&I services. It promotes community harmony and social cohesion in one of the most culturally diverse states in the world.

Cintia Lee is a Sydney-based NAATI Certified Interpreter and Translator in Spanish and English and holds a degree in English Philology. She has alternated her career between Spain—where she taught English and translated and interpreted for large corporations and government agencies—and Australia, where she has taught Spanish and accumulated a wealth of experience across a range of community settings with a focus on legal and law enforcement. She is passionate about helping others communicate effectively and strives for continuous improvement in an ever-evolving profession.

Marion Gevers is originally from a French-speaking family in Belgium, where three languages are officially recognised. Though she initially graduated in Clinical Psychology, Marion has always been passionate about languages and has been involved in translations right from the beginning of her career. She has been a NAATI accredited interpreter since 1998 and an accredited translator since 2007. She went freelance in 2013 after serving a number of years as a staff T&I at the Multicultural Health Unit of Hunter New England Health, and nowadays works mostly as a translator between French and English.
