Double award win for BBC/ OU co-productions

Two programmes co-produced by The Open University and BBC have won accolades at this year’s Grierson Awards.

The Green Planet: Tropical Worlds secured ‘Best Natural History or Environmental Documentary’. The landmark natural history series, presented by Sir David Attenborough was an immersive portrayal of an unseen, inter-connected world, full of remarkable new behaviour, emotional stories and surprising heroes in the plant world.

The judges said: “This was simply exemplary natural history filmmaking with stunning visuals and outstanding camerawork, partnered with exceptional quality of writing and storytelling. Genuinely taking us, as viewers, to places we’d never been before.”

We Are Black and British won ‘Best Constructed Documentary Series’. The two-part series followed six black Britons from very different backgrounds and viewpoints, as they came together under one roof, at a time when race and racism in the UK had sparked a nationwide discussion about what needs to change. Each had a deeply personal story to share and raised tough questions about being black and British in search of answers.

The judges said: “This film allowed us to learn something new and insightful from the well-cast characters in the series. The thought-provoking questions and personal stories shared through the programme’s central device provided a valuable platform for debate about insufficiently explored issues – with surprising moments shining through.”

Dr Caroline Ogilvie, Head of Broadcast & Partnerships, commented:

“Documentaries shine a light on our lives in all their complexities, raising awareness and telling stories that are impactful. We were honoured that in the 50th year of the Grierson Documentary Awards, four OU/BBC co-productions were nominated and two won – Best Constructed Documentary Series for We Are Black and British and Best Natural History and Environment Documentary The Green Planet (Tropical Worlds).

“This success is testament to the amazing work and collaboration of internal and external teams and most particularly the expertise of our academics.
