About me
I
completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at California State University
San Marcos and, in the process, fell in love with biological psychology. During that time, I was fortunate to have the
opportunity to conduct research in a psychopharmacology lab examining the
impact of illicit and clinical drugs on tolerance and sensitization in animal
models of behaviour. Looking to focus on
brain mechanism, I ultimately went on to earn a PhD in Cellular and Clinical
Neurobiology, studying illicit drug-induced gene expression and protein
alterations in human post-mortem brain, at Wayne State University’s School of
Medicine (Detroit, MI, USA).
My academic career began at Minnesota State University, Mankato (USA) as core faculty within Psychology. During my time there, I had the opportunity to engage in activity across the university and beyond. I served as Programme Lead for the BSc (Hons) Psychology, worked with colleagues to create an interdisciplinary Cognitive Science course, established the Undergraduate Research Center, and was an International Site Visit Delegate, travelling as a representative of the university to establish partnerships. In addition, I worked on public engagement including development of an active Brain Awareness Week programme within the community and producing and hosting a radio show that brought psychological science to the public.
After 11 years, I left as a tenured Associate Professor and moved to the UK to join the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London. There, I developed and led the MSc Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health, their flagship online distance learning course. During that time, I worked on both the academic and central university goals including serving on the IoPPN’s Distance Learning Senior Management Team. From there, I flexed my curriculum and pedagogic muscles and took a role managing the Curriculum Development Office at the University of Bath. I led the Curriculum Transformation, a university-wide change management project designed the full review and redesign all UG and PGT courses on campus. Most recently, I served as Psychology Subject Leader, Director of Accreditation, and Academic Board member at Bath Spa University, managing departmental operations, staff, and students across multiple single honours and combined UG courses.
In addition, I work as an independent higher
education consultant and supervise doctoral students in the Higher Education
Management DBA in the University of Bath School of Management. Currently, I am
Consultant Editor International for the journal Teaching of Psychology, and
just recently concluded my role as Chair of the International Relations
Committee for the American Psychological Association's Division 2: the Society
for the Teaching of Psychology. My wonderful colleagues and I author the
monthly Kaleidoscope column in The British Journal of Psychiatry which covers
developments in mental health and neuroscience from around the world. We also deliver a mental health research
webinar called Kaleidoscope Live! in association with Maudsley Learning.
Area of expertise
My interests are broad, but ultimately
coalesce around the areas of psychology, psychiatry, curriculum innovation,
teaching and learning, public engagement, higher education leadership, and the
intersection of education and social justice.
