With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Baby Plug - “My Time”

Atlanta’s Baby Plug broke out early this year with eccentric singles that sounded like nothing else in the city such as “No Vest (Lex Luthor)” and “No Fifties.” His latest, is a complete departure from his usual sound; he sing-raps over production that interpolates a euphoric festival-ready melody with signature Southern drums as opposed to more standard ATL fare. His lyrics don’t shine as bright as the production, except when he’s thinking about love, but those thoughts have a dark edge: “If I went down the road baby would you fuck wit me/If I had nowhere to go baby would you thug wit me,” he says, with a voice scratchy enough that he probably had to ask for a cup of tea after leaving the booth. “My Time” proves that Lil Uzi Vert is not the only rapper who can spit over anything, Baby Plug’s melodic style is similarly limitless.
