The Ones: Father’s “Handful”

The must-hear rap song of the day
Father

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Father - “Handful”

Atlanta rapper Father is really good at selling his indifference. His deadpan delivery makes it seem like he’s bored by everything, and his lyrics are even more apathetic to the needs of just about everyone around him. The only thing he seems to take pleasure in, ironically, is showing his coldness. “Handful” is the latest addition to his particular brand of sinister but amusingly disaffected scoundrel rap. He goes full heel, kicking his feet up as he rejects anyone trying to get close to him, or more accurately, trying to take his money. “Cute ass smile and your boy be chilling/Niggas don’t know, I’m the muhfuckin’ villain,” he sneers. The lone verse is bookended by a two-part hook that is nearly twice as long, in which he’s riding with demons and spooks and crooks and his rifles make you dance like every R&B star of the aughts. The eerie, skulking Bankroll Got It beat only enhances Father’s prowler bars. As he dips into a taunting singsong, it’s clear he’s having a ball playing the provocateur. Nobody ever roots for the bad guy, but they always seem to be having more fun.
