When Flatbush drill rapper Sheff G is at the peak of his powers, his songs are exhilarating. After briefly straying from the blistering sound that he cut his teeth on—songs like “No Suburban” and “Panic”—to test his range, he’s returned to his original hard-edged style. On “Tonight,” he channels bum-rushing energy into a stand-your-ground war cry. “Disrespect me, on my mother, I’m making bail tonight/Disrespect me or my brothers, we making bail tonight!” he barks. In under two minutes, he makes all manner of threats directed at just about anyone endangering him and his. His raps feel like wind sprints. As the vocal sample wails behind him, he bobs and weaves like a boxer poised to strike. “Tonight” is short, to the point, and highly effective: You cross Sheff G at great personal cost.
