About

I’m the one on the right.

I’m a philosopher and social theorist interested in neurodiversity, disability, psychiatry, medical humanities, social epistemology, critical theory, and a bunch of other things.

My research has been featured in Vice, Discover, and Forbes, among other places.

My first book, Empire of Normality: Neurodiversity and Capitalism, was published in November 2023 by Pluto Press.

I’m currently the world’s first Assistant Professor in Critical Neurodiversity Studies, at the Institute for Medical Humanities at Durham University.

Previously, I was Senior Lecturer in Education at Sheffield Hallam University, and before that, a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow in the Philosophy Department at the University of Bristol. I’ve also taught at the University of Bristol, King’s College London, and the University of Essex. I’ve been a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

I was awarded my doctorate from the University of Essex in 2018. My doctoral research was funded by the Shirley Foundation and was on the philosophy and ethics of autism.

See my research page to find out more about my work. See here for an up to date list of academic publications. I have a Google Scholar page here. I run the Neurodiverse Age blog at Psychology Today, covering issues relating to the theory and politics of neurodiversity.

I use they/them pronouns. The cat is called Marcel!
