Bethan Mcilroy, is spearheading an ambitious project titled “Roots to Growth: Cultivating Urban Agriculture in Nottinghamshire for Sustainable Community Development.”
Nottingham musician Kirk Spencer has been awarded the Roosevelt Scholarship, propelling him into a transformative exploration of participatory music initiatives across the United States.
Meet our 2023 Scholars
Freya has lived, studied and worked in Nottinghamshire all ofher life. She is a qualified Life and Careers Coach, accredited mentor and safeguarding practitioner. She is currently working for a coaching organisation in secondary schools. Whilst in America, she will be exploring strategies and interventions used to tackle serious youth violence, specifically those that support young adults 18+.
Leah is an artist, songwriter, freelance community arts practitioner and vocal coach from Nottinghamshire. Her project will explore and research into the impact individual artists, creative community arts organisations and groups, have on their local communities. She wants to better understand how through the arts we can better connect communities, create community and help individuals reach their creative potential whilst supporting wellbeing.
Meet our 2022 Scholars
My name is Anna and I’m a careers consultant at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). During my scholarship, I will be visiting US universities to understand how they use peer-to-peer support within their careers services. I will explore how working with students as partners can be utilised to enhance student engagement and employability outcomes across Nottinghamshire.
My name is Ell and I am a Peer Support Worker (PSW) for an Adult Local Mental Health Team for Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust. Currently, there is not much room for career progression as a PSW within the NHS therefore my proposed project is to learn from organisations of best practice in the US to implement Peer Leadership/Peer Led Services within our NHS.
I’m Eli, I have lived, studied, and worked in Nottinghamshire for over 7 years. I work in equality, diversity and inclusion at the University of Nottingham and my project will explore race equality initiatives in the US. I hope to exchange ideas and bring over innovation and good practice to implement within my work at the university and beyond.
Meet our 2021 Scholars
I’m Zaimal and I am passionate about bringing people together across difference. I work as Senior Campaigns Officer for The Fawcett Society, a charity campaigning for gender equality. My project will study the American experience of bridging divides and finding healing, focusing on three main themes: i) differences of identify, ii) differences of opinion, and iii) healing after prejudice based significant events.
My name is Natalie, and I am currently working as an Advisor for the Business & Intellectual Property Centre- supporting start-ups and entrepreneurs in accessing resources to grow their businesses. Whilst visiting America, I will be exploring strategies used to encourage economic development- focusing on adult education, employability and entrepreneurship.

Tom Cable Mayflower 2020 scholar
My name is Tom and I design and develop immersive learning days in primary schools across Nottinghamshire. I am ecstatic to be going to America to research the Mayflower in conjunction with Nottingham County Council’s Mayflower programme and to develop a new method to bring this unfamiliar story to life in classrooms across the county.

Sam Preston
I’m Sam, currently working for Energy Services at Nottingham City Council on behaviour change, a critical component of Nottingham’s ambition to become the UK’s first carbon neutral city. My scholarship project explores the unfolding sustainability stories of US cities, with particular focus on citizen engagement, finding inspiration to weave into Nottinghamshire’s own green journey.
Henry Franklin
My name is Henry Franklin and I am a Research Engineer at the Manufacturing Technology Centre where I am delivering the Construction Innovation Hub, a National Centre created to drive innovation and collaboration in the UK Construction Sector. My project will investigate the modern methods of construction deployed in the States to increase the efficiency of construction projects. I shall visit construction sites, manufacturing facilities and research organisations to explore the latest innovations in the US construction sector.

Ben Felstead
My name is Trekkah Benjamin, I am a Community Arts Practitioners and work for Nottinghamshire YMCA. I will be travelling across the USA exploring how the Creative Arts and Digital Medias are being used to impact not only participants’ artistic expression, but also their attitude and behaviour, community cohesion and wellbeing. My planned 6 week route is Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, El Paso, New Orleans, Nashville, Jacksonville, Atlanta and New York.
Tori Harrison
I’m Tori Harrison, a fundraiser for Framework Homelessness Charity and an individual passionate about social justice. By working with not-for-profits in America I hope to find the most effective strategies build relationships between charity and supporter and to encourage greater assistance for homeless people in Nottinghamshire.

Angelena Efstathiou
I am passionate and over excitable conservationists who specialises in bat ecology and whilst in the USA I will be researching two subjects: i) How to increase community and youth engagement with wildlife and ii) understanding species re introduction programs. I am hoping to bring information back to Nottinghamshire that will benefit wildlife and people, to inspire more people to get involved in its protection for the future.
Gareth Morgan
I’m Gareth, a writer, theatre-maker and education specialist from Nottingham. I’ll mostly be travelling in the Southwest of the US looking at how primary school aged children learn English & develop a love of reading, with a particular interest to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds, or with English as a second language. This is why there are loads of books in the background.

I’m Miles, I’m 24 and I’m an entrepreneur. As the world’s ageing population grows, huge numbers of older people will experience problems like dementia, loneliness and isolation. I’m an entrepreneur that believes technology holds the key to combating these problems and help seniors live a happier, healthier and more independent lifestyle.
