Recent Developments and Applications in earth sciences of electron probe micro-analysis

We are pleased to announce a four-day workshop on the use of the electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) with particular emphasis on modern developments and geological applications. The workshop will be VIRTUAL on 27-30 March 2023.

4th workshop on Electron probe micro-analysis in Athens

About

Title: “Recent Developments and Applications in earth sciences of electron probe micro-analysis”

Instructors (given in alphabetical order of the last name): Ioannis Baziotis (Agricultural University of Athens), Yannick Bussweiler (University of Cologne), John Donovan (University of Oregon), Stamatios Flemetakis (University of Muenster),  Ariadni Georgatou (GNS Science), Anette von der Handt (University of British Columbia), Chris Hayward (University of Edinburgh), Ery Hughes (Te Pū Ao | GNS Science), Rosie Jones (WDS Product Manager at Oxford Instruments NanoAnalysis,), Pierre Lanari (University of Bern), Serguei Matveev (JEOL Germany), and Lee M. Saper (University of Edinburgh).

Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) is commonly used to analyze the composition of solid geological materials to help answer a wide range of fundamental questions in geological and planetary sciences. The goal of this 4-day short course is to educate undergraduates, graduates, and early career researchers in the theory and practice of EPMA, with a specific focus on its application to geochemistry on different disciplines. This will be achieved through a set of online lectures covering topics ranging from conventional major element quantitative analysis to new developments in X-ray mapping, k-ratios, trace element analysis, measuring oxidation state and water content of hydrous glasses, tracing mantle processes, halogen measurements, magmatic sulfide implications, and characterizing meteorites. Additionally, will present the WDS analysis using SEM instrument. Furthermore, two live demonstrations using JEOL and CAMECA instruments of how someone is measuring on EPMA will be given during the virtual workshop.

Discounted access to the EPMA facility

All selected applicants will have the opportunity to receive a special discount on EPMA lab in AUAthens, to analyze (directly or send us the samples) their rocks (polished thin/thick sections or 1-inch circular mounts) in the 12 months following the workshop.

Registration

Participants are kindly requested to register for the workshop by sending an e-mail to EPMA lab (epmalab.aua@gmail.com) or by filling the form (click on "Register here"). The early registration fee is 30 euros and includes the attendance at the workshop, access to online material, and an option for special discount to the EPMA facility. Late Registration (after 31st December 2022) is possible, however, the registation fee is increased by 30% at 39 Euros. Therefore, book your virtual seat as soon as possible.

Agenda may be scaled back or cancelled in case of small enrollment (<15 participants).
