Blog Work place experience

Goodbye's

The girls at work took me for a goodbye lunch in Islington and bought me presents. I have really got some great friends through this experience and learnt a lot. While on placement I also found my first grey hair... wonder if it is just a coincidence...Unlikely.

I am so sad to be finishing my placement, I’ve have absolutely loved the real life hands on experiences that doing this has allowed me to have. The team have been so accommodating and wonderful to me, I feel very lucky to have been able to have this experience, especially in London… There is so much happening all the time and feel very lucky to be able to spend some time in this city too. By doing this placement it really has affirmed to me that I have made the right choice in my career path, and i've began to see that i there are so many prospects and areas of design that I can go into in the future, its not just limited to interiors or architecture.

Street art in London

Recycled, environmental work - Borough Market. Just walking through the streets in central London, I come across something new and inspiring.

Site Visit - Upper Brook Street

WEEK 7- This week I saw able to go to one of the sites that i have been working on and off throughout my time on placement, Upper Brook Street. Such a stunning town house in central London. I went there with a collage as we needed to measure the rooms, I felt like ti was brushing up on this as i haven’t measured an entire space since my first project at university, feels like such a long time ago. We managed to do the entire house in a couple of hours, working around the builders who were fitting and painting all thought the house. I met the client and QS for the first time too, they were lovely and good to meet the range of people involved in this project. I met my boss at the site after we had finished and she began to tell some of the labours some actions point that needed to be addressed, one of which was removing that panelling on the right side of the entrance hall. However, there was some miscommunication and the builder ended up removing the entire LEFT wall. everyone in the office was in hysterics, you can only laugh sometimes.

Minotti Collection Launch Party

WEEK 7- Last night I went to the amazing Minotti, collection event. It was so much fun getting to meet the designers, I made lots of contacts at this one, I think because I have been to a few now so I know a few faces and have more confidence to go up are start speaking to these designers. I met someone who studied and worked (in interior architecture at AUB) and have arranged another meeting for advice both in uni and career, so goo things are coming!! The event was so fun, lots of drinks, canapes and a really funky band. The collection was showcased beautifully. SO happy I went. (09/05/2019)

Photoshoot

WEEK 6- The photoshoot was so useful in seeing being scenes work that goes into dressing a space. When we first got there the residential property was quite a mess, we tidied and dressed the space with some item that we borrowed from traders and some which we found at the property. The whole time we were there it was relax yet we still acted In a professional way. The houses were so beautiful, and beautifully designed.

This work placement have gone so quickly, I can't believe I've been here 9 weeks now, I feel so settled in the company, and I look forward to coming in to see everyone and see the project progressions. It was nice coming back after a little Easter break, some of the projects are so much more developed that when i first got here and its really nice to see some of my input into the designs. I feel like the experiences that i have had here will guide me in my future careers as i know what I enjoy more in real life practice instead of just at uni in fictional project. This week there has been a lot of co-ordinating with other coampnies which have been outsourced for bespoke pieces. Ive been in conversation with these people and provided them will cutting sheets so when the pieces are made there is no error in what they will be making, this a precaution as this is the first time the company has worked with some of these people. There are so many fabrics in the office, I was allowed to take some away and made pillows with them, perks. (05/05/2019)

WEEK 5- An artist came in and took images of sourced fabrics, furniture and the space and created a mock up of the design space to pitch to the clients. This week it has been so interesting to see how the company works with outsourcing people, when the artist came in to the office it was professional to begin with, but as the day progressed and everyone was getting on with their own works it became a lot more relaxed having personal conversations. There is only one room in the office so it might be different in other companies but its nice to see how the relationships grow. (29/04/2019)
WEEK 5- Its been really nice coming back after Easter, I feel more refreshed. It gave to time to reflect on what I have enjoyed doing, and what i haven't enjoyed doing. I also found myself missing work and the office! So, that is a really positive sign that I am doing the right thing! I have made really good friends with the girls in the office and have met the outside work now which has felt so welcoming! so coming back this week I have done a few things. At the beginning of this placement i knew that the company didn't used AutoCAD or photoshop that much as only one of the staff member had any training in it (Freya, who graduated from AUB in 2016 doing interior Architecture and Design. She had done her placement at Rebecca Hughes in her 2nd year and now works full time). So, i didn't think i would have the chance to exercise those skills while at Rebecca Hughes, but this week I was able to make mock up elevations on photoshop to be shown at a meeting with the clients. I was pretty nervous because I said that i knew how to use the software pretty well, and as i started i began to realise i may have forgotten and didn't have Jamie there to help! :( As I got used to it having not used it more a few months it cam back to me, and I am quite proud of the results and it clearly explains the design intent with the correct materials and in context of a panelled room. WEEK 4 - I helped in scheming and the making of 20 presentation boards to pitch to the client in one of the initial design meetings, the meeting was held in the office in Islington, 4 members of the family came to the meeting and I sat in, it was more formal that i had expected it to be, as previous meetings i had sat in with these clients were more brief and relax, this meeting lasted around 4 hours and we went through the entire house. This week had been fully dedicated to getting these boards done in times for this meeting, from doing this I definitely learnt skills, however, doing this the full week was tiring and I had hoped to look at other areas. Oh well, there is still time. (04/04/2019)

All the boards for the meeting room were laid out in order of how a viewer would walk trough the house.
Dining room scheme
Guest bedroom scheme
Living/Dining room scheme

Sales Reps

WEEk 3- (24/03/2019) One of the sales rep's came in from De Le Couna to show off the now collection. All the materials were very beautiful and luxurious. Rebecca and the team usual work from the extensive fabrics and material library that have have in the office, so the rep coming into the office means the likely hood of their fabric being used in the designs is much higher. Being at placement has given me an extensive knowledge of materials, what and where the different types should be used for most appropriately.

Boards for client meetings

WEEK 3- Scheming for Deacons rise project, in a luxury 25 rooms house in London. These boards will be presented to the clients in the next few days. The background of the board have been pained in the wall colour of the schemed rooms and the materials and images of existing and sourced furniture have been placed upon this in a corresponding order and size, by doing this you can see how the colours and texture speak to each other in the space. This was one my favourite task that i have been sent, because its hands on and tactile and when you finish to task, there is a physical item you can see and appreciate. This week i have really enjoyed as it has been very hand on, i made all the boards myself and i find it really enjoyable to have a solid physical piece of work you have produced by the end of the day. It has made me think about different sectors of design that I would be able to do this type of design everyday, theatre set design maybe? (22/03/2019)

Whistley gardens, a beautiful estate in Surrey. Walking round the ground of the estate gave a lot of design inspiration and will be bought into future designs. Although i've just moved to London its so nice that very quickly you can feel like you're getting out of the city and can be in a clean space.

BADA Event

WEEK 2- The company got invited to the BADA antiques and fine art party in Slone Sq, It was a really fun event, with companies, artists and perspective buyers all looking at the collections. It was very fancy with champagne flowing. It was a really good opportunity to meet others in the industry and appreciate the artwork and event.(18/03/2019)

The centre piece of the event space, it was really beautifully done and tasteful.
WEEK 2 - Design process in the office, as the office is fairly small and the designing takes place in the same room as the other tasks that are involved in running a company, the room easily gets very messy, tipping fabric boxes and spending them across the office looking at them in different lighting. The designing works usually by finding inspiration images online which are similar to how the the team have interpreted the brief, then using the images to find fabrics and materials from the library, setting them together in trays and seeing how the scheme works together. This is the first stage of the deign process at Rebecca Hughes. (14/03/2018)

SACCHI GALLERY

There were two kid playing in this exhibition and it was absolutely hilarious
Going to the gallery was ver

VR GAMES

My friends came to visit, so much fun exploring london, found a cool bars and played on VR sets
Sample boards made that are to be sent to distributors, QS's and shown to clients after the design has been finalised.
Matching materials to find price alternatives, materials to be used for blinds and Valance in luxury home.

Coffered and corniced ceiling design

WEEK 1- This week I think the girls have been easing me into the work, I spent a lot of time finding inspirational images for the boards that I made for the clients looking at, it shows the coffered ceiling detailing, used to diffuse like is social spaces in the home, this was used for the client to see the difference in style, and what they wanted this to achieve in their space. I hadn't come across or know what a coffered ceiling was before this as i never looked into luxury design before, this is a more standard look for this sub-section. I also began making relationships with suppliers and reps, getting lead times, trade discounts and sourcing for some of the schemes. This experience is a lot different to how I expected it to be, im not sure what i expected before i started, possibly a longer design process, but here that particular part is very short and its the admin surrounding that take a lot of time. (10/03/2019)

WEEK 1 - One of my first tasks was to take a look and a scheme for a town house redesign in London, speak to suppliers about trading prices and order samples for the company materials library, it was mainly admin based and i hadn't realised how much remind the scene work goes into the designing process, making sure it is within budget, the lead times of the fabric and furniture, but also having to co-ordinate tradesmen and deliveries. I have learnt a lot about how a small business is run. Im getting used to the commute and really getting along with the girls in the office, the office is only one room, but, big enough that we aren't walking over each other, it nice that there can be casual conversation throughout that day in this one space. (07/03/2019)
First Commute to Work. Packed. I feel like definitely won't get used to this. (04/03/2019)

01/03/2019 I have moved in with my Grandma, so I can do a placement in London (which is where i eventually want to work in design). We had a dinner moving in celebration.
