Joseph Breden

I have always had a keen interest in interior design, from a very young age. I always involved myself in family projects. At the age of 18 I decided to go to college to study Art and Design to peruse my career in interior design allowing me to learn many new artistic skills such as graphic design, painting, sculpture, printing and collaborating with other courses. I applied for university and secured a place studying Interior Architecture and Design at The Arts University Bournemouth. I’m completing a seven week work placement at the MGS developing my knowledge and skills for industry.

As a designer, I aim to give my work meaning and focus on the users. I make myself aware of the context and history of a building. I enjoy working in many mediums using old and new materials pushing beyond the ordinary.

This website shows examples of the work I have produced in my time at college and University. I have experiment with a variety of subjects from wallpaper design to designing co-working spaces.

FMP College

Wallpaper Design

During my final major project at college I focused on interior decoration. The main part to the design was the hand screen printed wallpaper. The inspiration for the wallpaper design came from the idea of colony's turning fear into beauty.

To display the wallpaper I created an interior set scaled 1:1. This involved upcycling old furniture, painting, construction, photographing and editing using Adobe Photoshop. The purpose of creating a physical set was to demonstrate how the wallpaper would work in a space and help a client visualisation the overall effect.

Level 4, Unit 1

Design Communication

This project was to create a Theatre set inspired by the short story by Italo Calvino’s “The Distance of the mood”. The project involved breaking the story down into a story board creating 8 different scenes for the Shelley Theatre located near Bournemouth. The project requirements were a series of photographs from each scene, a design report, a model and an ongoing diary containing research and influences. Level 4, Unit 2

Socially Conscious Design

Working alongside charities and organisations I had to design in an existing Grade II listed building located just off Bournemouth town centre. The space had to be designed with the community in mind, so I created a restaurant/café cooking facility to help fight against the growing issues of child obesity. Level 4, Unit 3

Integrating Technology

Looking towards the future this project involved in-depth research into current and future trends including the use of the latest technology and materials. Located in the heart of Bournemouth I was tasked to create a Tattoo and body modification removal salon in the grade II listed Echo building. For this project I paid particular attention to sustainability, services and Building Regulations. To read more click the link below

Level 5, Unit 1

Place Production

This project was to create a new way of living for the 3rd age community. Using a 1970s office block located at the top of Bournemouth I created an interactive Co-living scheme to prevent todays issues of isolation in the 3rd age community. Level 5, Unit 2

Contemporary Environment

Choosing the topic Architecture of Madness, I focused my design on the theme of Gender Dysphoria to help people gain a better understanding helping prevent discrimination. My scheme was based in the Shelley theatre located near Bournemouth. My design became an experience involving a serious of rooms all including a meaning to induce a feeling relating to gender dysphoria. For more images and information click the link below.

Level 5, Unit 3

L6, Unit 1: Exploratory Practice

For this unit I chose the study group 'The Social' and project topic 'A platform for joy' This unit was about connecting Southampton central station with Southampton City linking the two with Southampton great history. I also aimed to solve other issues of the station for example the disconnection from waiting areas and the platform and solving the current issues of wayfinding at the station.
