Finding & Ranking the World's Best Disc Golf Courses 2024

If you're curious about how we created the rankings, here are the basics:

• How did you find all the courses?
  Thanks to disc golfers across the world, UDisc Courses is the most comprehensive and frequently updated disc golf course directory in existence. The vast majority of courses in the directory were eligible to be ranked among the world's best.
• What disc golf courses weren't eligible to be ranked among the world's best?
  Courses that were available for play for less than 120 days in 2023 and courses designed for extremely short-range practice (i.e., courses that are essentially mini golf for disc golfers) were excluded from the rankings.
• How did you create the rankings?
  2024's World's Best Disc Golf Courses rankings are based on a methodology that applies more weight to recent reviews and helps identify which courses with excellent but relatively few ratings are true destinations rather than just local faves. Always interested in improving, we've worked to enhance how well this year's ranking system accounts for the wide range of experience behind disc golfers' course ratings.
  
  Notably, due to this methodology, some courses that have higher average ratings in the UDisc Courses directory may be ranked below courses with lower average ratings due to rating norms in different regions and other factors.
  
  All courses were subject to the same metrics, and no course was moved up or down the rankings based on the preferences of UDisc staff.

Which Countries Outside the U.S. Have Top 100 Disc Golf Courses?

Seven countries other than the U.S. (the place with by far the most disc golf courses in the world) have courses in the World's Best Disc Golf Courses top 100 in 2024:

Along with Sweden's commanding lead, something of note here is that New Zealand is the first nation outside of North America or Europe to have a course crack the world's top 100 since we started releasing these rankings.

What's the Average Age of the World's Best Disc Golf Courses?

The average age of the 100 World's Best Disc Golf Courses in 2024 is just under 11 years old, and 64 of the courses were established in the last decade (2014 or more recently). Here's a look at how many of this year's top courses were built within five-year time spans over the last 45 years:

Why do recently-built courses dominate the World's Best Disc Golf Courses rankings? Two of the biggest factors are likely these:

1. A large number of the world's over 15,000 disc golf courses only came into existence within the last decade. For example, around a third of U.S. courses were built within just the last five years.
2. More recently-built courses are likeliest to suit modern tastes and feature quality infrastructure such as newer tee pads, the latest baskets, and more.

Still, the list isn't entirely filled with spring chickens. In fact, two of the top 100 courses have 40 or more years under their belts.

We'd give you a top five youngest courses, but there would be a 15-way tie for second made up of courses built in 2021 – the most common year of establishment for this year's crop of top 100 disc golf courses.

We can give a nod to the three youngest courses to make this year's list, though:

How Hard Are the World's Best Disc Golf Courses?

The vast majority of the World's Best Disc Golf Courses top 100 offer multiple layouts, but very few of them are easy:

This isn't much of a shock as the players most likely to keep score and share their opinions about courses with UDisc often have a bit of disc golf experience under their belts. The very things that make courses excellent for beginners – generous fairways, lack of out-of-bounds and other restrictions, fairly few obstacles, short holes, etc. – make them less remarkable to many experienced disc golfers. Therefore, adding truly beginner-friendly layouts to courses designed and groomed with skilled players in mind can be difficult.

That said, there are a number of facilities with a top 100 track that offer entirely separate courses that are easy. A few examples include Kippasuo Am and Kids that are both at Finland's Heinola DiscGolfPark World along with 2024 #2 course Kippasuo Pro, Sabattus Disc Golf's Owl in Maine that's on the same property as #59 Sabbatus Disc Golf: Hawk, and the Purple Pitch & Putt at Washington's Kayak Point Disc Golf Resort that's also home to the #52 and #93 courses this year. Though these shorter courses rarely get top ratings across the board because of how simple they seem to longtime disc golfers, they're essential to growing the sport.

While we weren't surprised that Easy layouts were extremely uncommon at the World's Best Disc Golf Courses, it was interesting to see that their most popular layouts (i.e., the ones UDisc stats show are played most often) were spread fairly evenly into our three other difficulty categories:

Note that the total there is a bit shy of 100 due to a few courses not having layouts with difficulty ratings.

On average, achieving par on one of these layouts earns players a round rating of about 200 on our 1-300+ scale. That happens to exactly match the target rating we suggested experienced disc golfers aim for when we introduced our disc golf round ratings late last year. We don't factor par into our difficulty classifications, but knowing the average par rating on the most popular layouts at such well-regarded courses gives us an idea of the level of challenge disc golfers tend to equate with a premium experience.

What to Know Before Reading the World's Best Disc Golf Courses 2024 Rankings

• Layout difficulty: Most of the world's best disc golf courses offer multiple layouts thanks to various tee and basket positions on holes. The symbols in this column show the variety of layout difficulties players can experience at each course. • A green dollar sign ($) under "Fee?" means a course is a traditional pay-to-play.
• A light gray dollar sign ($) means that a course is technically free to play but donations are encouraged.
• A blue dollar sign ($) means that there is a fee associated with playing a course that isn't directly related to disc golf. Examples include parks (city, county, state) that charge entry fees no matter what activity park-goers plan to do and parking fees. 
• No dollar sign means a course is free to play.
