Two-thirds of trio Yahritza y Su Esencia sat down at the Variety Studio presented by DIRECTV at the Latin Grammys to talk about the artists who inspire them and what they would be doing if they weren’t nominated as best new artists on Latin music’s biggest night.

“We would be in school,” says 15-year-old Yahritza Martinez. “Just living the normal life, probably making TikToks,” says Jairo Martinez, 17. And of course, watching the Latin Grammys.

Since their breakout song “Soy El Unico,” made Yahritza the youngest-ever Latin act to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, life is anything but ordinary. Relative to their age group, the members of Yahritza y Su Esencia are most inspired by quotes seen on TikTok that are then turned into songs.

“My parents always listen to Románticas,” says Yahritza, referring to the melodic and anthemic love ballads that have played in Latin households for decades. “‘Des Amor’ caught a lot of attention at the time when I wrote ‘Soy El Unico,’ everybody was so sad, I felt like I could write a song and make people listen to something where it’s a little bit different.”

Something different, indeed. The group caught the attention of some of the biggest names in Latin music who have reached out to show their support.

“The Grammys are really big for us because we’re barely starting and everything’s just happening so fast in a short period of time,” Jairo says.

Adds Yahritza: “Artists that I listen to reach out to me and they’re like, ‘you’re doing something that’s amazing.’ And that motivates me even more to write.”

Among their peers, they most admire Jessie and Joy — “they have a vibe” — and Ivan Cornejo, who they recorded “Inseparables.” “He reached out and said ‘let’s make a song together.’ He inspired me to make music, too, because I saw how young he was. I feel like we can inspire other kids.”

The sibling trio says on the horizon they want to meet new people and go on tour.
