In Età
Macedonia e poi annessa all’Impero Romano. In Età Bizantina (V-XIII secolo d.C.),

fonti chiamano in diversi modi. Omero, nell’Iliade e nell’Odissea, menziona i Sinti
I Minii,
discendenti degli Argonauti approdati a Lemno, sarebbero stati cacciati dai
Pelasgi.
Mar Egeo, proprio a Lemno?

cariche ricoperte e l’età, queste ultime espresse come nell’etrusco.
Focea, in Asia Minore.
I francesi,
a nessuno dove l’avesse nascosta.
All’arrivo in Egitto, la stele era nuovamente sparita, gettata in
altre trascrizioni viene reso come z). L’interpretazione è ancora oggi dibattuta e,

in altre varianti regionali. Alcuni tratti peculiari lo avvicinano all’alfabeto etrusco: è
l’età: il lemnio šialχv(e)is avis, “quaranta anni”, richiama simili formulazioni etrusche.

Efesto e i suoi assistenti: i Cabiri.
quest for the gold fleece, while the Achaeans reached it as well, on their way to
Troy. Lemnos is where the Greek hero Philoctetes was abandoned after being
bitten by a snake.
Following a brief occupation by the Persians in the late 6th century BC, the island
was conquered by Miltiades, the Athenian military general and victor of the Battle
of Marathon (early 5th century BC). Lemnos became an Athenian Cleruchy, a
direct possession, complete with two city-states, Hephaistia and Myrina. In the
late 3rd century BC, during the Hellenistic Age, the island was conquered by Philip
V of Macedonia and later annexed by the Roman Empire. In the Byzantine Age
(5th-13th century AD), Lemnos once again flourished, with large churches and
monasteries being constructed in connection first with the imperial court of
Constantinople and then Mount Athos. From the 13th century, the island was
occupied by the Genoese and the Venetians, before being annexed in 1472 by the
Ottoman Empire, regaining independence in 1912 through annexation into the
Kingdom of Greece. From 1923 to the present, Lemnos has been the subject of
research by the Italian Archaeological School at Athens, at the sites of Hephaistia,
Poliochni, Chloi, Kaminia, Roussopouli and Vriokastro.
THE SIRENS OF LEMNOS
The main archaic sanctuaries (7th-6th century BC) on the Island of Lemnos, at
Hephaistia and Myrina, were found to hold numerous terracotta statues of Sirens,
monsters with female faces and bird bodies. At heights of up to 50 cm, they were
modelled with a cylindrical headpiece (polos), unfurled wings and an archaic smile.
There is no figured work on the back, but they have a hole, so that they could be
hung on the walls of sanctuaries as devotional objects. In mythology they were able
to calm the winds, therefore they used to be offered to propitiate a safe journey (in
summer, the meltemi wind blows on the north Aegean from the northeast). With
their bewitching singing, the Sirens led sailors who crossed their path to ruin.
Exceptions to the rule, Odysseus and Orpheus survived, each with a different
strategy: Odysseus plugged his travelling companions' ears with beeswax and had
them tie him to the ship’s mast, so that he could hear but resist the fatal singing,
while Orpheus covered the sounds of the Sirens with the notes of his lyre.
WHO SCULPTED THE KAMINIA STELE?
Before it was occupied by the Athenians in the 5th century BC, the Island of
Lemnos had been inhabited, between the Iron and the Archaic Ages (11th-6th
century BC), by native peoples referred to in various ways by the ancient sources.
In the Iliad and the Odyssey, Homer mentions the Sintians “with their savage
voices”, possibly of Thracian origin and said to have cared for the god Hephaestus,
protector of the island, after he had been thrown off Olympus by Zeus for having
defended his mother, Hera. In his Histories, Herodotus refers to the Minyans and
the Pelasgians. The Minyans, descendants of the Argonauts who had landed on
Lemnos, were said to have been banished by the Pelasgians. The latter had
originally lived in Attica, on the slopes of Mount Hymettus, but the Athenians
forced them to leave after they misbehaved towards the Athenian women at the
Kallirhoe fountain, and so they emigrated to Lemnos. Thucydides, in his History of
the Peloponnesian War, calls the inhabitants of the island Tyrrhenians, the same
name used by the Greeks to refer to the Etruscans. It was this reference by the
historian, together with the discovery of the Kaminia stele, that sparked so much
interest in the Tyrrhenians of the Aegean: could they be an Anatolian people who
stopped on Lemnos before reaching their final destination on the coast of
southern Tuscany and northern Latium? Or could they be, instead, Etruscans who
set out from central Italy and established an outpost in the Aegean Sea, on
Lemnos to be precise? Scholars are still debating this unresolved question.
The Stele of Kaminia,
the Etruscans and the
island of Lemnos
One of the most enigmatic and intensely discussed inscriptions of classical
antiquity, its interpretation remains a source of controversy.
The stele gave rise to the activities in search of the Etruscans undertaken
by the Italian Archaeological School at Athens on the Island of Lemnos,
since 1926.

The stele dates from the Archaic Age (6th century BC) and is of particular interest
due to two inscriptions which, although using the Greek alphabet, are in a
language similar to Etruscan. Reports of ancient authors on the Pelasgians or
Tyrrhenians, who would have inhabited Lemnos until it was conquered by Athens
(circa 500 BC), led the Italian Archaeological School at Athens to carry out
excavations and research on the island, seeking to determine the origins of the
Tyrrhenians of Italy, or rather the Etruscans.
The stele, produced in a local workshop, is a thin slab of reddish-yellow soft
limestone originally two metres high, of which only the upper half has survived to
the present. The figure engraved on the front, in extremely low relief, is a standing
warrior seen in profile, armed with a spear and a circular shield. The face on his flat
head, with its large eyes and pronounced smile, is similar to other images found on
Lemnos, on vases and terracotta objects of the Archaic Age (7th-6th century BC).
The first inscription, which consists of 94 or 95 letters and punctuation marks
distributed on 8 lines, is engraved around the figure. A number of lines are meant
to be read from bottom to top, others horizontally, with alternate lines running
from left to right, then right to left. A second inscription of 105 letters on three
lines, incomplete at the bottom, is positioned vertically on the right side: starting
from the upper-left, it runs continuously, with each line reversing direction from
the previous one. This text was engraved by a different stonemason than the first.
Interpretation of the two inscriptions is disputed. They mention a number of
individuals, together with their ranks and ages, with the latter expressed in the
Etruscan manner. One theory identifies the figure as the warrior Aker, son of
Tavarsa (Aker Tavarsio), who was a descendant of an illustrious family of Lemnos.
According to a different reading, he was Holaie (Hylaios in Greek), possibly a native
of Phocaea, in Asia Minor.
The stele was a funerary monument, indicating a privileged burial site.
THE DISCOVERY
The stele was discovered between 1883 and 1885, in the countryside of eastern
Lemnos, near the village of Kaminia, at the small church of St. Alexander (which no
longer exists). One account credits the discovery to Ioannis Pantelidis, a
benefactor and amateur archaeologist who, having emigrated to Alexandria, in
Egypt, made a fortune manufacturing tobacco and soap. According to another
more bucolic version, two local farmers discovered the stele in the fields, and later
entrusted it to the care of Ioannis Pantelidis.
The discovery quickly drew the attention of numerous scholars. George Cousin
and Félix Dürrbach, two young students of the French School in Athens, wrote the
first published work on the stele in the Bulletin des Correspondance Hellénique.
The French, through their Ambassador to Constantinople (Lemnos was part of the
Ottoman Empire from 1479 to 1912), asked for, and obtained, permission to take
possession of the stone, sending a warship to collect it only to come away
empty-handed when Pantelidis opposed the move by burying the stele on his
farmland and pretending it had been stolen. Then he returned to Alexandria, where
he died without having told anyone where the stone was hidden.
The stele was discovered for the second time by Pantelidis’ son, Odysseus, who
found it after digging up around 50 acres of his father’s land. In 1900, Odysseus
decided to take the monument to Alexandria, bribing the Ottoman authorities
before loading it on a Greek sailing ship at night. Upon arrival in Egypt, the stele
once again went missing, with the captain of the ship insisting that it had fallen into
the sea on account of a failure during the journey. Unconvinced by his story,
Pantelidis Jr. contacted the Greek counsel, had the ship searched and retrieved the
stone. Once again he took possession of the stele, this time on the grounds of filial
piety, claiming that it was meant for his father’s grave.
Odysseus Pantelidis wanted the stone to be shipped to Athens and kept there, but
his Ottoman passport put him at risk of being convicted or being subjected to
other restrictive measures for illicit trafficking of artworks. He then entrusted the
task to Vasileios Apostolidis, a Levantine Greek physician and archaeologist from
Alexandria who brought the stele to the National Museum of Archaeology in
Athens, where it remains on display to this day.
THE TRANSCRIPTION OF THE STELE
The Kaminia stele is inscribed on the front (A) and on the right side (B). The
sequence in which the different portions of the texts should be read is uncertain,
with two approaches considered possible. The punctuation marks consist of two or
three vertical dots. The sign š in the transcription indicates the sound sh (as in
sharp), as opposed to s (represented in other transcriptions as z). Even today, there
is much debate over interpretation. Although the similarity of certain words to the
Etruscan language makes them understandable, full comprehension or translation
of the texts is not possible.

THE ALPHABET AND THE LANGUAGE OF THE KAMINIA STELE
The alphabet of the Kaminia stele is Greek, of the ‘red’ type (or Western Greece
type), characterised by a trident sign (Ψ) denoting the sound kh rather than that of
ps, as is the case in other regional variants. It shares certain distinctive features
with the Etruscan alphabet: there are no letters to express b, g, d, while two signs
are used to distinguish the sounds s and sc, and the vowels o, u are represented by
a single sign (O, whereas in Etruscan Y is used). In the word morinail, for example, a
reference to the city of Myrina can be noted. Two different types of lettering are
present in the inscriptions of the Kaminia stele, distinguished by the round or
square forms of certain letters.
The language of Lemnos, together with the Etruscan and Rhaetian languages,
belongs to the same ‘Tyrsenian’ linguistic family. There are unquestionable
similarities to archaic Etruscan, such as the endings, plus certain words or
expressions used to indicate age. For example, šialχv(e)is avis, Lemnian, for “forty
years”, recalls similar Etruscan formulations, while other distinctive features reveal
the existence of elements specific to the Lemnian language.

THE ISLAND OF LEMNOS
The Island of Lemnos is situated in the northeast portion of the Aegean Sea,
facing the Dardanelles Strait, the gateway on the Mediterranean Sea to
Byzantium/Constantinople and the Black Sea. Human presence dates to
approximately 12,000 years ago, in the Upper Palaeolithic period. Between the
Neolithic and the Bronze Ages (mid 4th-2nd millennium BC), the island became a
crossroad of peoples and cultures, as well as the site of one of the Aegean’s first
fortified settlements, Poliochni, a city similar to nearby Troy, which was discovered
by Schliemann, with which Poliochni engaged in trade. Before Lemnos was
occupied by the Athenians, it was inhabited by populations called Sintians
(Homer), Minyans, Pelasgians (Herodotus) and Tyrrhenians (Thucydides, Strabo
and Plutarch). Their culture was Thracian-Anatolian. They spoke the language of
the Kaminia stele and worshipped a great goddess named Lemnos, like the island,
as well as the blacksmith god Hephaestus and his assistants, the Cabeiri. In
mythology, the island was one of the stops made by the Argonauts during their

O Georges Cousin
