Green Week at LCF | 10 – 14 February 2020

A celebration and exploration of sustainability at London College of Fashion, UAL. Sharpen up your practical skills and knowledge in an array of events covering bioplastics, cactus grafting, recycling plastic and much more. Activities are open to all UAL students and there’s something for everyone - check out the full schedule below;

Monday 10 February

Cactus Grafting Workshop

1-2pm / repeated 3-4pm

Room: JPS 605 at John Princes Street

Create your own unique cactus and learn about grafting from cactus expert Gynelle Leon, author of the book Prick: Cacti and Succulents: Choosing, Styling, Caring. The same workshop will run twice at the times shown! This workshop is supported by the LCF Good Ideas Fund.

Tuesday 11 February

Experimental Natural Dyeing

Workshop 1: 10am - 1pm - Colours / Workshop 2: 2-5pm - Patterns

Room: LG B109 at Lime Grove

In this two-part workshop, learn to process plants for natural dyeing to create beautiful effects on fabric using colours from a range of natural sources, and take samples away with you, with expert Katelyn Toth-Fejel. You can come to either one, or both, of the workshops!

  • Workshop 1, Colours: Learn about the range of colours that can be created using natural dyes and experiment with combining colours.
  • Workshop 2, Patterns: Try a range of folding and clamping techniques to create patterns on the fabric.

Wednesday 12 February

Bioplastics

1.30-4.30pm

Room: MS A013A at Mare Street

This workshop is an introduction into the process using food waste to create bio-materials/plastics into a valuable material resource with Marilena Siamptani, LCF Specialist Technician. The participants will gain a solid understanding of fundamental techniques that will empower them to make their own materials. This includes learning the necessary steps of testing out different recipes, and how to form the material into a potential product, using hand-craft techniques. Through this workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the potential uses of these materials, and the ethical and environmental benefits associated with them.

Thursday 13 February

Recycling Plastics

10am - 2.30pm

Room: GL G06 at Golden Lane

Recycled plastics workshop: an introduction to the process of converting household plastic waste, into a valuable material resource. Make your own recycled HDPE plastic sample to take away with you, learning the steps to recycle plastic into something new, with Marilena Siamptani, LCF Specialist Technician. Please bring some HDPE plastic items that you no longer need, such as milk/shampoo bottles (check for the number ‘2’ in the recycling symbol).

UAL's Useful or Beautiful Challenge is our annual competition that challenges staff and students to take discarded materials from all around UAL and repurpose them into something useful, beautiful or both. It’s really easy to get involved and you can visit the submission form for all the relevant information.
