About our Course

This course provides an overview of the key IP rights (e.g. patents, trade marks, copyright, design rights, utility models, trade secrets, know how) and associated agreements commercial lawyers experience in their day-to-day practice.


Learn which IP provisions are key to protecting your clients’ rights and how to exploit their intellectual property assets.  There is a particular emphasis on patents and related agreements.

DAY 1 - Securing IP Protection (3 Hours​)

  • Overview of IP Rights (e.g., patents, trade marks, designs, copyright, trade secrets)

  • How to protect your IP rights (e.g., patents, designs, trade secrets)

  • Inventorship and Ownership of patents and other IP Rights

  • Patent database searching (e.g., learn how to define and conduct searches, determine IP status etc)

DAY 2 - Enforcing and Challenging Patents (3 Hours)

  • How to read a patent and interpret claims

  • Infringement and enforcement of patents in the UK and before the Unitary Patent Court

  • Challenging patents in the UK, US, and before the European Patent Office or Unitary Patent Court

  • Freedom to Operate - ensuring your client has freedom to use a technology or launch a new product

Day 3 - IP Agreements, Trade Secrets and Due Diligence (3 hours)

  • Agreements with IP Provisions (e.g., CAs, MTAs, MoAs, R&D Agreements, Licences, Assignments)

  • Key Provisions in IP Agreements (e.g., arising IP, joint IP, obligations, milestones, warranties, termination

  • Confidential Information and Trade Secrets - drafting agreements, 

  • Due Diligence
