TAMPA, Fla. — Archaeologists will be searching at the former Zion Cemetery site in Tampa again Tuesday.

At least one new grave was discovered there yesterday.

According to Spectrum Bay News 9’s partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, there are possibly four more in the 200 block of Robles Park’s Moore Court.

Archaeologists said they appear to be undisturbed, but they need to get to them to be sure.

So far, about 300 coffins have been confirmed. But officials say there could be another 500 in the area.

Built in the early 1900s, Zion is believed to be the first African American cemetery in Tampa. Close to 800 black residents of Tampa were buried in the segregation-era cemetery from 1901 through 1929.

Developers built over the property. Ground penetrating radar indicates that no one ever moved the graves.
