Bristol Translates 2024 Banner

Aimed at practising translators at any stage of their career and at language enthusiasts who want to explore the world of literary translation, Bristol Translates offers the opportunity to work with leading professional translators to translate texts across different literary genres.

New this year: in addition to workshops for those translating into English, we are also offering workshops for translators working out of English.

Bristol Translates summer school takes place entirely online, making it accessible to participants around the world. Workshop groups are limited to a maximum of 12 students. The programme features language-specific translation workshops, both into and out of English, as well as hands-on sessions about various aspects of today’s translation sector, industry talks and professional and networking sessions.

In addition to literary translators themselves, Bristol Translates speakers include publishers, agents, editors, researchers and writers. Participants have had the opportunity to pitch their project to decision-makers in publishing, and take part in exclusive competitions.

Thank you for creating such a supportive, encouraging, inclusive and non-judgemental environment. This week has really boosted my confidence and I now feel that it is actually possible to pursue a career in translation (which I was doubting earlier this year). I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to join Bristol Translates 2023. Thank you again.

The quality of the teaching was superb - workshop leaders were brilliant at what they did and also friendly and encouraging. Lots of collaboration, laughter and finding joy in what we do, as well as exploring new and challenging types of translation.
