New IMF research shows that the pandemic has furthered the trend toward rising market power in advanced economies. Rising market power has been associated with declining business dynamism and lower wages, and M&As by dominant firms have reinforced it. For these reasons, the Fund sees a case for enhanced competition policy frameworks to cope with the rise in market power in general, and in the digital economy in particular.

At this event, divided into two sessions, speakers discussed the issue of the rise in market power of members of the digital markets and the scope for enhanced competition policy to tackle this trend.

This event was organised in cooperation with the Brookings Institution.
