Cary Grant, The Making of the Hollywood Legend

Academic and author Mark Glancy joins Charlotte Crofts, director of the Cary Comes Home Festival, for a sneak peek of his new book, Cary Grant, The Making of a Hollywood Legend (OUP, 2020) which is published in the USA on 15 October and will be out in the UK on the 14 January.
The book draws on extensive archive research both in the Cary Grant Papers at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Margaret Herrick Library, but also Bristol Archives – shedding new light on the circumstances in which Archie Leach grew up in Bristol, UK. The book includes detailed analyses of all of Cary Grant’s films, situating them within industry contexts revealed by examination of the production paperwork.
Mark Glancy is Reader in Film History at Queen Mary University of London. His media work includes appearances on the BBC Radio Four programmes Archive Hour, Back Row, and Great Lives, as well as many articles on film history for the magazines BBC History and History Revealed. Most recently, he served as the editorial consultant and on-screen contributor to the feature-length documentary film Becoming Cary Grant (2017). His publications include When Hollywood Loved Britain: The Hollywood “British” Film, 1939-1945 (1999), The 39 Steps: A British Film Guide (2003), and, as a co-editor, The New Film History: Methods, Sources, Approaches (2007), and Hollywood and the Americanization of Britain, from the 1920s to the present (2013).
Mark will also be joining us at the Cary Comes Home Festival in 20-22 November 2020 and we will be officially launching the book in Bristol in January.
Cary Comes Home is a biennial festival which aims to celebrate Cary Grant’s Bristol roots, develop new audiences for his work and recreate the golden age of cinema-going. This year’s festival proper is due to take place from 20-22 November 2020. We’ve decided not to go ahead with physical events this year, but we are programming more exciting online events. What is “Pay what you feel”?
We want to make our events accessible whatever your budget, but for those that can afford it, we’d really appreciate it if you can give generously to keep the festival afloat in these difficult times.
We rely on ticket sales as our main source of income, but Covid-19 has made this impossible this year, creating a huge shortfall in our finances. We’re a biennial festival so we’re hoping by 2022 we’ll be able to return to live events, but in the meantime we’re determined to celebrate Cary Grant as best we can virtually.
