What you will learn

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

 Understand how explosive contamination occurs using real-life examples. 
• Make cost-effective decisions on suitable sampling approaches  
• Select and use appropriate sampling tools for soil and water.
• Prepare contaminated soil and water for analysis and interpret results


The course is aimed at military range managers, commercial and industrial explosives manufacturers and interested stakeholders from academia and industry. The course would also be useful for regulators responsible for explosive contaminated land and water in the Health and Safety and environmental areas. 

The skills obtained through this course will enable participants to undertake accurate and reliable site characterization to support operational readiness, legal compliance and positive public perception. 


Core content

The course will  demonstrate how to undertake best practice to identify explosively contaminated land and will include: 


• The theory and principles of explosive contamination, soil sampling and water sampling 
• Practical experience in water and soil sampling, laboratory sample preparation, extraction and analysis and interpretation of results.
• Application of assimilated knowledge through a series of workshops based on real contamination incidents. 
• Finding cost-effective solutions identify explosive contamination. 
• Networking opportunities with experts in the field of military range management and groundwater. 

The course takes place at Shrivenham which provides all of the resources required for identification of explosive contamination including 100 metre explosive range, on-site surface water, groundwater models, explosive analytical facilities and teaching facilities

 

Location and travel

Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) is a Cranfield School based at the Ministry of Defence establishment on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire borders.

Shrivenham itself lies in the picturesque Vale of the White Horse, close to the M4 motorway which links London and South Wales. It is 7 miles from Swindon, the nearest town, which lies off the M4 at the hub of Britain’s motorway network.

Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol and Oxford are all within an hour’s drive and London less than two hours away by car.

All visitors must be pre-booked in at reception by the person they are visiting on the campus.
