International Energy Awards

The International Energy Awards celebrate the most critical aspects of the global energy transition.

Each year the Awards shine a spotlight on the organisations and teams from around the world making the biggest difference in terms of workforce development, engagement, and technical innovation.

In addition, individuals are recognised, both early in their career with the Young Professional Award, alongside the highest honour given on behalf of the EI’s global membership – the President’s Award.

The International Energy Awards will be presented as the centrepiece of the prestigious International Energy Week Dinner on 27 February 2025 in London.

International Energy Workforce Award

Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF): Nurturing a sustainable energy workforce- PPAF community-driven approach to off-grid renewable energy
The PPAF Renewable Energy Program has so far implemented over 3800 projects with a cumulative capacity of 13.8 MW, benefiting over 300,000 people. The program has had a positive impact on the lives of beneficiary communities, improving their quality of life, increasing economic activity, and reducing the environmental impact.

  • Transforming Energy Access - Learning Partnership (TEA-LP): Energy access Masters’ courses
    TEA-LP is a partnership of 30 universities delivering Masters level energy access courses to ensure that developing countries have their own highly skilled energy experts for sustainable local energy access projects. We expect over a thousand Masters students to have undertaken the courses by the end of 2026.
  • PSE&G: Clean energy jobs program sponsored by PSE&G
    The PSE&G Sponsored Clean Energy Jobs Program is transforming lives by creating more than 2,400 community-based clean energy jobs which exceeds the programs targets. With innovative components like the Energy Efficiency Learning Center and On-the-Job Training, it promotes diversity, equips workers with future skills, and ensures a sustainable, inclusive energy transition.
  • Shortlist: Women for green jobs
    To date we have:
    - Placed 224 women across participating countries
    - A public talent pool of 2,794 pre-screened vetted female candidates for future hiring needs of companies.
    - 25% placement rate of women into high-visibility jobs.
    - 58% of all placements have been in rural locations.
    - Successfully supported 23 DRE employers through the program.

UK Power Networks: Your local net zero team
UK Power Networks newly founded Local Net Zero team has one main mission: empower local authorities to turn their energy plans into reality. Through active engagement, listening and co-design across London, the South East and East of England, the team is successfully bringing them closer to the data, people and tools to make this happen.

Octopus Energy: Saving sessions: rewarding 700,000 customers to use less energy at peak times
At the peak of the crisis, we wanted to reward customers for saving precious power. Our Saving Sessions showcased sustained impact: with 700,000 engaged and empowered customers shifting 1.86GWh load out of busiest times, delivering a cost-effective replacement for expensive coal contingency, benefiting our grid and customers' pockets.

  • EDF: Using innovative campaigning to showcase how consistent investment from an energy company can help Britain achieve net zero and help consumers save cash and carbon
    With over 25 years of investment in the UK, EDF turned up the noise on showcasing how an energy company can help Britain achieve Net Zero and support customers. Innovative content published across multiple channels meant the campaign reached a range of audiences from consumers to policy makers.
  • Energy Networks Association: Open networks
    Open Networks is an industry-leading programme that brings together industry practitioners, energy networks operators, Ofgem and government in building the world’s largest local flexibility (energy) market, which could save consumers £10bn/year in energy costs by 2050 and reduce total costs of the Net Zero transition by up to £70bn.

Cambridge Vacuum Engineering: Electron beam welding dramatically speeds up manufacture of turbine monopiles
The benefits of Ebflow to the energy sector are undeniable. The technology is quicker; uses less energy; costs less; does not require consumables; reduces waste; and offers significant carbon savings. Individually and combined, these benefits can enable increased production of renewable energy assets and accelerate the sector’s net zero carbon ambitions.

  • Octopus Energy: Octopus power-ups: Unlocking FREE power at super-green times
    Octopus Power-ups showcases exceptional use of technology to avoid precious renewable energy going to waste. Our first-of-its-kind partnership with UK Power Networks has unlocked FREE surplus green energy to 24K participant customers, whilst drastically cutting wind generation curtailment costs - a WIN for people, our planet, and our grid.

EVLO's fault tolerance facilitates swift outage resolution, and the automated switch from grid to island mode boosts flexibility and resilience.  
  • UK Power Networks: Speeding up low carbon connections
    Energy needs in UK homes and businesses are changing fast so UK Power Networks abandoned traditional thinking and innovated to radically improve connections processes for installers and customers. Its game-changing, new Smart Connect portal slashes approval times from ten days to just minutes, offers unprecedented functionality, increased customer benefits and more green tech, than any other network.
  • The Kensa Group: Heat the streets
    Heat the Streets has demonstrated the feasibility of placing ground array infrastructure in the public highway and the replicability of this, how this can mimic the current gas network, and ready for mass deployment to help bring the UK in line with the 2050 Net Zero targets.
  • Viking Cold Solutions: United States cold storage tulare south reduces costs and cuts greenhouse gas emissions with thermal energy storage technology
    USCS’s implementation of Viking Cold’s TES technology cut refrigeration energy use by 24%, slashed CO2 emissions by 1,897 tons in two years, and reduced peak demand by over 30%. This project enhanced energy efficiency while better maintaining food quality and sets a new standard for sustainable practices in cold storage.

International Energy Awards categories

The energy industry needs people with the talent, the drive, and the passion to help us tackle climate change and meet the glowing energy needs of the world’s populations.

This award recognises work undertaken to bring new talent into the industry, as well as the provision of continuing professional development schemes for current workforces. It will look for in-house schemes that nurture talent and foster inclusion, the use of innovative learning solutions and collaborations between industry, industry bodies, academia and other partners.

The judging panel will be looking for:

  • Initiatives that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Promotion of the future skills needed for the energy transition and/or awareness of the role of behaviour change in the workplace to help manage energy use.
  • Innovative use of partners and techniques
  • Deliverability of the initiative
  • Clear metrics and results

You must be able to validate the success of your project with proven results.

Effective advocacy and public engagement is often the key determinant of the success or failure of any initiative. This award recognises the year’s best group contribution to raising public awareness across the energy industry, covering internal and external communications with such stakeholders as customers, regulators, employees, shareholders etc.

The award recognises innovative campaigning techniques in the form of social media, reports, journalism, digital campaigns etc., that have contributed to improved understanding and knowledge of industry-wide energy issues.

The judging panel will be looking for:

  • Identification of the issue(s) to be communicated, and the need for the initiative
  • Originality and effectiveness of the message and methods undertaken
  • Clarity of planned aims and objectives
  • Deliverability of the initiative
  • Effectiveness of the public engagement programme

You must be able to validate the success of your project with proven results.

Technology in all its forms is an essential and exciting aspect of the energy industry, a frontier where new and better solutions are constantly being devised. The role of digital technologies and data in particular are taking the industry into the ‘4th revolution’.

This award will recognise the year’s best innovative technological development or implementation of an existing technology with the power to become a gamechanger or disrupter in the industry, either on the demand or supply side, and in particular contributing to the transition to net zero and/or extending universal access to energy.

The judging panel will be looking for:

  • Identification of the technological innovation which represents a major advance or development
  • Commercially viable technology that is ready for market and for wider adoption and application
  • Inventive new technology or innovative implementation of existing technology
  • Clear demonstration of the benefits of the innovation over existing methods

You must be able to validate the success of your project with proven results.

The EI's Young Professionals Network is delighted to welcome entries for the seventh EI Young Energy Professional Award. Young professionals are the next generation of energy leaders and we want to celebrate your contribution to the industry and reward your innovation, drive to deliver and passion of the younger generation of energy talent. Applications from those with less than five years in the industry are welcome.

The judging panel will be looking for:

  • Career Experience statement:
    In 250-500 words, describe a project from your career, either in your professional career or through working with the local community, where you have either led the activity (as a project manager) or made a significant contribution towards its delivery (as a key team member)
  • Industry Outlook statement:
    In 250-500 words, please share your views on the outlook for the energy industry by answering the following question: "What is the single biggest challenge facing the energy industry in the next 20 years?"
    The judging panel will be looking for you to demonstrate your views and feelings about an industry issue, including how you would like to see them addressed and how your future work might contribute towards finding a solution for this challenge.

  • Endorsement:
    Please provide a written endorsement of up to 200 words from your employer, client or supervisor. This should include their signature and contact details for verification purposes.

This most prestigious award is made in the gift of the Energy Institute by The President and in the name of the global membership to recognise outstanding leadership and achievement in the energy industry and in support of the EI’s ambition of creating a better energy future for our members and society by accelerating a just global energy transition to net zero.

It is made on an international basis to an individual whose work has brought benefit to society. Recipients will have contributed to addressing solutions relevant to global energy challenges, in particular combatting climate change and opening up access to energy.

Each year, the global  membership of the Energy Institute and non-members alike are invited to make nominations for recipients of the award. Nominations can also come from within the EI’s committee networks. The EI Nominations Committee is then tasked with shortlisting candidates that can demonstrate their impact against as many of the criteria below as possible:

  • Demonstrable achievement to either: tackle climate change/reduce the carbon footprint of the industry to help reach net-zero by or before 2050, either through the reduction of emissions or through storage of carbon, or to provide access to cleaner supplies of energy.
  • Acknowledged by peers as a thought leader in their field. The work of the recipient should be well known to their publics.
  • Commitment to raising industry standards, improving knowledge and skills and/or championing the contribution the energy industry makes to society.
  • Commitment to making the energy sector more diverse, inclusive and reflective of the society it serves
  • Championing the industry among the younger generation.

The EI's Council determines the recipient of the award, which is usually made on an annual basis. The President hosts a lecture for the recipient to share their work and celebrate receiving the award.

Nominations for the President’s Award can be made at any time for consideration by the EI’s Nominations Committee. Your nomination should include the full name of the nominee and the reason for the nomination. A short biography would be welcome, but not essential. See who's previously won this prestigious award.

Thank you to Steph McGovern, our previous host

Award-winning journalist and broadcaster Steph McGovern is the presenter of the eponymous Steph's Packed Lunch, Channel 4’s daily live lunchtime show. Steph is also one of the hosts of Have I Got News For You on BBC One and regularly appears on TV and radio panel shows.

Prior to this, Steph worked in financial journalism for over 15 years and spent 8 years on BBC Breakfast, travelling all over the UK to cover economic news and broadcast live from over 500 businesses.

Whether speaking to factory workers or FTSE 100 CEOs, Steph’s mission was to uncover and explain the real economy. This is something she has continued in her Channel 4 show, with regular features such as her Small Business Market and Job Clinic.

Originally from Middlesbrough, Steph started as an apprentice engineer at Black & Decker where, aged 19, she won the title of Young Engineer for Britain before studying at University College London.
