EUA calls on Iranian authorities to rescind death sentence against Amadreza Djalali

09 May 2022

Since Iranian-Swedish researcher Dr Amadreza Djalili was sentenced to death in Iran in 2017, the European University Association has repeatedly urged for his release. Amid reports that Iranian authorities intend to proceed with the execution of Dr Djalili in the coming weeks, EUA renews its call for Iranian authorities to immediately suspend the capital sentence issued against him and to secure his immediate release.

EUA once again condemns in the strongest terms this violation of judicial norms and Dr Djalali’s rights, which demonstrates a troubling disregard for international standards of academic freedom, due process, fair trial and humane treatment of prisoners as guaranteed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party.

Arrested in April 2016 while he was traveling to participate in a series of workshops hosted by universities in Tehran and Shiraz, Dr Djalali was later convicted and sentenced to death for “corruption on earth”, based on unsubstantiated allegations – disputed by Dr Djalali – that he had provided intelligence to Israeli authorities. Before his arrest, Dr Djalali taught at universities in Italy, Belgium and Sweden. Further information about Dr Djalili’s case is available on the website of Scholars At Risk.
