About this event

In July 2020, the government announced an ambitious strategy to tackle obesity. To fulfil several commitments made in the strategy, the government announced an additional £100 million in 2021/22 to improve the support available for adults, children and families to achieve and maintain a healthier weight.

One of the commitments in this strategy was to offer primary care networks the opportunity to equip staff to become Healthy weight coaches through training delivered by Public Health England.

This event marks the launch of the Healthy weight coach elearning programme which is aimed at staff interested in supporting people living with overweight or obesity to help them to make positive changes to their health and health behaviours with the aim of promoting a healthier weight.

The development of the Healthy weight coach training has been a collaborative effort between Public Health England, (which transitioned to The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities on 1 October, 2021), academics from The University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University, Health Education England, NHS England and Improvement and The Department for Health and Social Care. Other organisations such as Obesity UK and staff working in primary care have also contributed to the development of the training content.

The event is open to primary care professionals who work in healthcare practices and pharmacies, local authority public health teams, weight management providers and third sector organisations.

The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities invites you to the launch of the Healthy weight coach elearning programme, which will cover the following:

  • What is a Healthy weight coach and what do they do?
  • Why is the Healthy weight coach role needed?
  • What modules and supporting documents are included as part of the Healthy weight coach elearning programme?
  • How does the Healthy weight coach role fit into the weight management care pathway?
  • How can primary care get involved in research to evaluate the Healthy weight coach elearning programme?
