The Centre for Science and Security Studies at King’s College London is holding a nuclear history conference online in July 2020. Academics, veterans of Britain’s nuclear programmes and other researchers from around the world will come together for informal discussions of nuclear history.
Alan Jackson and Geoffrey Chapman will present new research from King’s on the history of Britain’s nuclear weapons programme.
Alan and Geoffrey are PhD students in the War Studies Department at King’s. Alan will talk about the credibility and protection of the RAF Bomber Command “V-force” - the Valiant, Vulcan and Victor jet bombers - in the 1950s and 60s.
Geoffrey will talk about “tacit knowledge” and the UK’s nuclear weapons programme, focusing on the skills needed to sustain the programme and highlighting the trouble taken to maintain and protect those skills.
