About this event

The Centre for Science and Security Studies at King’s College London is holding a nuclear history conference online in July 2020. Academics, veterans of Britain’s nuclear programmes and other researchers from around the world will come together for informal discussions on nuclear history.

This welcome session will be introduced by Richard Moore.

Barry Searle and David Warren will talk about the history of Orford Ness in Suffolk, used by the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment between the 1950s and 1970s and now owned by the National Trust.

Barry and David work as volunteers for the Trust and have also established the Independent Research Group on Orford Ness (IRGON).

Barry will review the wider history of the Ness, including the military development and testing that took place between 1915 and 1973. David will talk about IRGON and outline its work to date, including on over-the-horizon radar and the Blue Streak ballistic missile, and its future plans.
