About this event

"Everyone has the right to learn".

In November 2022 we published a report outlining young people with SEND experiences of being excluded from school. This has been produced by The Children’s Society’s Disrupting Exploitation Programme. The report has been informed by young people with SEND who have experienced exclusions, and follows on from our previous Youth Voice Exclusions Report.

At this webinar we will share the key findings from the report, explain more about the links between exclusion and child exploitation and share our recommendations for schools.

Birmingham City Council and the Birmingham Children's Trust will speak about Children's Rights in education, creating a child-friendly city and Early Help Partnership support available.

The report highlights issues that young people highlighted as contributing to their exclusion, such as racism, their reputation and unrealistic expectations of young people's maturity. It shares young people's thoughts on the lack of communication from schools and how it affected their experience at school and looks at what young people found helpful and unhelpful in response to their behaviour. The report concludes with recommendations for schools, local authorities and government borne out of what young people said.

This event is for schools from Birmingham and the West Midlands, and organisations working with them, and priority will be given for schools in this area.
