Former Garda Sentenced for Domestic Abuse following GSOC Investigation

A former member of An Garda Síochána has been sentenced to six months, with three months suspended, for domestic abuse-related offences, following an investigation by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

The former Garda appeared at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin today, Monday 18 October 2021, after pleading guilty on 28 July 2021 to trespass and assault causing harm to his ex-partner. These offences were committed while he was a serving member of An Garda Síochána.

GSOC provides an independent investigation service for members of the public who wish to complain about the behaviour of An Garda Síochána.

GSOC would encourage any person who has been the subject of abuse from a domestic partner – or ex-partner – who is a Garda to contact GSOC so it can be investigated.

The sentence

  • In addition to the sentence, the former Garda also had a number of conditions placed on his conviction. These included supervision by the probation and welfare service, drug treatment, anger management training, and the payment of a compensation order of €1000 to the victim.
