M.J. Roberts opens her Chord Brothers series with Rock Hard, which follows Drummer Ryder Chord and his bandmate and best friend’s younger sister Lexi.

Ryder is a complex character who has suffered a devastating tragedy which still haunts him. He’s an impassioned artist living the rock band life and up until recently had put his bandmate and best friend’s little sister in the friend zone. Until it’s impossible for him to ignore his attraction to her. Especially when Lexi has longed to be with him for a long time.

Although it’s told from both points of view, the emphasis is on Ryder, who is closed off and has to work through his issues along with the additional band drama created by him and Lexi being together.

The secondary characters, although immature at times, are vital in the story’s development as the reader also gets a taste of band life: the concerts, their love for music, life on the road.

Rock Hard is book #1 of the Chord Brothers series by MJ Roberts. It is told from both points of view with a happy ending. Genres: Contemporary Romance. Tropes: rock romance | forbidden romance

This blurb sounded simply delicious, and I love exploring new-to-me authors. I find the the rockstar trope is really hit or miss- in part, because at times the story feels told- but MJ Roberts brought some nuance here that I appreciated. This really feels more like a best friend’s sister story- that just so happens to take place in an epic rock band.

Ryder is the drummer god of band Hard Chord- and he’s your classic artistic musician type. He lives for the music, for the artistry, and lately, he’s living for his bandmate Lexi, a complication not only because Lexi is his best friend’s little sister but ALSO because his best friend Jace is ALSO in the band. And Lexi has always had an interest in Ryder- pining away silently until she has the courage to go after the man she’s grown up swooning over. UH OH- sounds dramatic and messy. These two find their way to each other on a tour break, unable to resist their attraction, but can their relationship last beyond the safety of their private week of passion? Or will their bubble burst?

Ryder has a lot of dimension, his story is more about him being a suffering artist or a man-whole rock god who needs to reform his ways. Rather, we have a complicated man suffering years after a devastating tragedy, at times still drowning in his own ghosts. He definitely gets the bulk of the story focus, which was a new experience for me (I normally relate to and connect with the heriones more- but they are often the narrative focus or the primary voice). We certainly get some of Lexi- particularly as it relates to the imminent drama of her and Ryder’s dalliance becoming public and drama with her brother. And, while we do have quite a bit of story relative to the familial drama and Ryder’s past, we still have plenty of the rockstar trope plot points. Life on the road, performing, band issues, and the whole making it in the big cutthroat world of music. But, it didn’t feel as trite to me as some other rockstar stories- perhaps because the characters’ challenges aren’t solely pinned on the fact that they are in a band and living the rockstar life.

I enjoyed a lot of this, though I must admit it took me longer than normal to get really invested in the characters and connect with them- odd for me because it wasn’t like they didn’t have depth. Perhaps it’s because Ryder’s voice is the more dominant (most of the POVs are his)- and the author makes some creative choices in terms of her writing style and in helping us see his inner artist (the music side of him)- which sometimes distanced me from him, since his brain works so differently. He’s an intense character who feels so deeply, is tortured and broken, so the empathy was there. The story also felt a bit too long for me- perhaps a bit more story or specificity than I felt I needed.

But the characters so make the story shine- and the secondary characters also added a lot of fun and charm. I’d be curious to check out their stories. All in all, a solid introduction to this author.

Drummer Ryder Chord and his band are touring in their bus. He loves it except for his bandmate & friends little sister Lexi that should be off limits. When forced to get a motel room together can he keep to the rules of a band? Do not get involved with a bandmate or your best friends sister! Sadly, I really struggled with this one as I found the writing a little mechanical/hard to connect with the characters in spots as it reads like third person with every action told but is written in first person. “Jase lopes out in the lead, then Hit Man, then Lexi, and I pull up the rear.” This has a more YA vibe from the speech/banter between the bandmates. I did end up DNRing but others might enjoy this one about the inner going ons with this band on the road and the struggles they face personally. Told from Ryder’s POV.

“It’s absolutely impossible to take a risk where you put everything you have in jeopardy. Until. You grab hold of yourself, commit and breathe. You know why? … You find the person who’s worth it.”

3.5 stars

This was a really intriguing read. My first by this author, it wasn’t the typical rockstar romance that I was expecting, but is actually a dramatic and emotional read that is multilayered and complex. It’s an in-depth look at life on the road with an up-and-coming rock band told through the eyes of its passionate and emotionally damaged drummer, and an intense romance that permeates through all of the different elements of that.

Ryder is the drummer and songwriter for rock band, Hard Chord. He is a wildly passionate artist, living and breathing all things music, and with a soundtrack to his life constantly running through his head. But lately Ryder’s passion has a second target – his bandmate and the little sister of his best friend, Lexi. He has suddenly stopped seeing her as just Jace’s little sister, and recognises her as a woman – a woman he wants, even though everything in him tells him it’s wrong.

Rule number one of band-dom: You never sleep with anyone in the band.
Rule number one of bro code: You never sleep with anyone’s little sister.
Rule number two of bro code: You definitely never sleep with your best friend’s little sister
Rule number it’s so obvious it’s a one-two-three count even a deadbeat drummer can keep:
You never. Ever. Sleep with your best friend’s little sister when she’s in the band…and he is too.

Lexi grew up being in love with Ryder. It’s taken her years to build up the courage to make her move, and when she does, Ryder is helpless to resist her. And while on a short break from their tour, the two of them spend a blissful week alone exploring each other in every way they can before work calls them back to the band and real life – a life where their feelings for each other complicate everything.

It sounds like a pretty simple set-up, but it’s anything but straight-forward. A tragedy in his teen years has left Ryder deeply wounded and somewhat closed off, its soul shattering impact leaving a mark on every aspect of his life. And Lexi is struggling with her own issues, and with sharing the news of her and Ryder with her brother, which creates even more tension. But this book is so much more than just the love story. This is very much Ryder’s story, his journey to deal with his demons and find happiness. It’s also a story of band life – living on the road, the concerts, the music, the passion and love for their art, and the strong dynamics that bond not only the band, but their fellow musicians. Everything is explored in detail and you feel like you’re experiencing it all right alongside them - the dizzying highs and the devastating lows, the teasing banter and arguments, and the incredible connection that ties the four of them together.

The supporting characters are such an important part of this book and bring a lot to the story. In particular fellow band members Jace and Hit Man (yes, that is apparently his name) – though total man-sluts, they are highly entertaining and have hearts of gold and the book follows their journey as well. The dynamics between them all is what makes the book what it is, and I loved watching the interplay and bond between them.

“We are always a team. Always. We carry our burdens, our fears, and our successes together. That’s what we do. Even when it feels like we can’t.”

This book is written pretty much entirely from Ryder’s POV, with a few glimpses from Lexi sprinkled throughout. It allows us to get up close and personal with this highly complex character, and at times it’s a really heartwrenching read (his history is just tragic). He’s going through so much, and he feels everything incredibly deeply, but he’s also smart, sarcastic, funny and so damn sweet. I found the constant references to his internal jukebox to be a little bit much at times, as were the musical metaphors – it shows us how Ryder’s life is so intertwined with his music, but it got a bit tiresome.

I found Roberts’ writing style to be really unique, and it’s actually difficult to explain why. It fits with the uniqueness of the story, but it was different from what I was used to and I admit I did have a bit of difficulty connecting with the story because of it. It’s also a really long book, and though the detail sets the scene well, I feel like we didn’t need quite so much of it.

The book ends well, and though there are threads left undone, they will most likely be answered in future books of the series. Next up is the wonderful Jace, and I’m excited for him to find his HEA.

I enjoyed this one. 3.5 stars.

Rock Hard came recommended to me since I love just about all things romance. It's not my typical read, I usually stick to my fantasy genre and romance within it, but this was an interesting book.
I didn't quite know what to expect with a rock and roll type book and was pleasantly surprised by some aspects of the story. Most movies and books portray a lot of drugs and violence, and I was glad that those were absent from this book.
Ryder, the main character for all that he is a rock star with a messed up past, is actually very much a sweetheart and a good guy. His bandmates and the sub-characters for the book are equally likable.
The chemistry between the two main characters Ryder and Lexi is undeniable. But I also enjoyed the relationship and friendships of the band as a whole. The constant jokes and the camaraderie they show each other was what really drew me in.
The part that I enjoyed most, surprisingly, was the parts about the music. I loved the songs constantly being mentioned throughout and how they played into the story. I loved when the music would take over certain scenes and how it sort of enveloped everything.
I know this book will entertain readers who adore music and love the rock and roll lifestyle.

This book isn't really like the others i reviewed but i loveeeeed it. I was literally hooked on the very first Line and didn't want to put it down from there. It's written in 2 perspectives which makes it really Easy to Read. IT also has some good Spice and you know we like a little spices but IT was Spice with a plot. The book takes a lot of time to develop and deepen friendships too. This book is like the Friends that are more like a family kinda thing and I lived for it. In the book Ryder said to Lexi: "I know that book's really porno", that's exactly what my boy bestie said to me while reading it. So be prepared for that Spice before you start but believe me it doesn't outshadow the storyline. This book also handles a lot of trauma and healing which makes it even better! It shows that healing doesn't go without effort and without your beloved supporting you. I was really hooked by this book and the good thing is that there is a whole series about this!!!! This really is a book that Will get you through this boring pandemic so don't hesitate and buy it.

M.J. Roberts, the author of this romance novel provided me with the free copy of the ebook.

She has immense knowledge about the rock bands, the ins and outs of the musicians and their life and that’s reflected in her writing.

The main characters Ryder and Lexie, have a strong attraction towards each other which they keep to themselves until it cannot be resisted. Ryder is aloof and has his past tragedy that shaped him the way he is. He is passionate about the band and Lexie, whom he cannot get over. The attraction, love, friendship, music and gigs will take you around the country, this book will be a good read if you’re interested in romance coupled with rock bands.

This story is Ryder and Lexi’s story!

Both the hero and heroine have been friends for decades but band mates for a few years! Lexi is a forbidden line Ryder has never considered crossing but one night changed all that!

There were aspects of this story I really liked such as Jasper and Ryders friendship and how understanding they were with one another. Their friendship was one of the things I enjoyed most about the story.

Lexi herself we only get a little from! Most of the story is through Ryders perspective and I wish we got more of Lexi because honestly I really didn’t connect with her character and at times felt she was really juvenile.

I liked how Ryder had a huge connection with music and had an internal playlist for the different moments in his life.

For Ryder Chord, living in the fast lane means trying to outrun a broken heart. Haunted by tragedy, dogged by guilt, this bad boy rocker is about to come face to face with his saving grace. Lexi Evanovich is nobody's angel. She can fight her own battles, sleep with whomever she wants and fall in love with whoever she chooses. Except when it's her brother's best friend. Rock Hard has a lot to offer. Roberts brings on the sizzle while targeting the emotions. Lexi and Ryder electrify the soul with their haunting melody. Once you tune in, it's hard to tune out.

3.75stars--ROCK HARD is the first instalment in MJ Roberts’ contemporary, adult CHORD BROTHERS erotic, rock, romance series. This is drummer and lyricist Ryder Chord, and singer Lexi Evanovich’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Ryder and Lexi) ROCK HARD follows the forbidden romance and relationship between drummer Ryder Chord, and singer Lexi Evanovich.Lexi is the sister of Jase Evanovich, Hard Chord’s bassist, and there is a rule while working with the band: never sleep with anyone in the band; never sleep with anyone’s sister; and never sleep with your best friend’s little sister but drummer Ryder Chord is about to break all of the rules with his attraction to Jase’s sister, the woman who has starred in his fantasies and dreams. Left alone for several days while the rest of the band members do their own thing, Lexi and Ryder act on their attraction, if only for the time they are left alone. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Lexi and Ryder, and the potential fall-out if Jase discovers the truth about his best friend and little sister, and a past that Ryder struggles to let go.

A large portion of the story line focuses on music, the running ‘juke-box’ inside Ryder Chord’s head, which is often distracting at pivotal points in the story but our hero has a form of ‘synesthesia’ wherein Jake sees color, sounds and symbols, often times relating to specific song titles and lyrics that are matched to the current events and situations in his life. There is also a copious quantity of reflective memories, called ‘rewinds’ in the story, relating to Ryder’s state of mind-we learn about his past, his anger and his guilt that tend to suffocate our story line hero. Hit Man is a literal man-wh*re, and many readers will struggle with the lack of a line drawn between his personal and public life.

The relationship between Ryder and Lexi is a best friend’s younger sister/forbidden romance in the wake of potential problems leading to the break up of the band. Lexi has lusted after her brother’s best friend for as long as she can remember, and not that she is with the band, Lexi wants the man that calls to her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate

We are introduced to the other members of the band: Lexi’s brother Jase, and flamboyant Hitman; members of the group Zeet Fleet (Matt, Aaron, Julie, Zeeter), as well as Hit Man’s wife Candace, and their son Caleb, and a brief intro to Ryder’s brothers Cole, Zach, and Lucas.

ROCK HARD is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and responsibility, grief and acceptance, love and understanding, family and friendships. The premise is engaging and entertaining but often reads like a script, a journal of events and timelines- the flow is a little rough. The romance is seductive ; the characters are broken, struggling but trying to move on.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Ryder has Jase's bass strapped to his back and carrying his drums in his ready-to-break trap case with Lexi behind him carrying Jase's amp when they find themselves locked out of the tour bus in the cold rain.  Hit Man left his version of the 'sock on the door' for them.  Unbelievable!  The gig ended five minutes ago and not only is it cold, but they aren't in the best area of town.

Lexi and he decided to find a hotel room for the night instead of waiting for Hit Man to finish with his groupies.  Yes, there seems to be more than one.  Seems like every conference is in Detroit right now, but they finally find a room.  With one bed.  He is triple screwed.  You never sleep with a member of your band.  You never cross the bro code and sleep with a band member's sister and you DEFINITELY stay away from your best friend's little sister.

Lexi fell in love with Ryder when she was seven and he was fourteen when he lifted her up to get her scared kitten out of a tree.  She was heartbroken when her brother took him away two years later to play in a band.  By the time she joined the band at eighteen, she had already been friend-zoned.  Until Detroit.  When she fell even further under his spell and for a guy who doesn't even know she exists.

I loved this book and it being written by someone with an inside track to the reality of traveling with a band makes the characters even more believable.  This book is well written and the characters are fully developed.

I love the characters in this book and although this is Ryder and Lexi's story there is a full cast in this book.  We have Hit Man who is a player to top all players.  We have Jase who has stood by Ryder through his worse days.  We have Zeet Fleet, another band, and close friends and we can't leave out Ryder's brothers.

I absolutely love Ryder with his internal jukebox, clock, and recall.  No wonder he gets very little sleep, his brain never shuts down.  I died laughing about the Valentine's Day wedding and boy did I cry for Riley.

I've read many Rock and Roll novels, but MJ Roberts gathers her inspiration...uhmm...dirty stories.... from actually traveling with her famous drummer husband and has seen it all.

I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of this series and MJ Roberts's complete library.

M.J. Robert’s “Rock Hard” follows Ryder and Lexi on their journey to figure out love and how it fits with the band. This book is primarily in Ryders point of view with a few switches to Lexi’s point of view. I had never read a book that followed the guy’s point of view and found this to be really unique. This isn’t the typical rockstar romance, but I loved it none the less. I love that I was able to see the guys take on how relationships work. “Rock Hard" does cover some difficult topics such as PTSD, depression, rape, and murder. If these are triggering topics for you this isn’t a book for you. However, I fell in love with Ryder and Lexi’s story. This a great story about two friends who find love within each other. I would definetly recommend this book to anyone!

“Rock Hard” follows Ryder and Lexi as they realize their feelings for one another and figure out a way to date while ensuring that the band will stay together. Ryder and Lexi are a part of a band along with Jase, Ryder’s best friend and Lexi’s brother, and Hit Man. For as long as the ban has been together Ryder has seen Lexi as just another one of the guys, but when they are forced to share a hotel room one night that all changes. While Ryder struggles to contain his feelings, Hit Man and Jase leave town for a few weeks leaving Ryder and Lexi alone. Ryder believes in the codes: "Rule number one of band-dom: You never sleep with anyone in the band.
Rule number one of bro code: You never sleep with anyone’s sister. You definitely never sleep with your best friend’s little sister.
Rule number it’s so obvious it’s a count even a drummer can keep: You Never. Ever. Sleep with your best friend’s little sister when she’s in the band…and he is too.” Will Ryder be able to stick to the code or will he break it for love?

This story interested me because I’ve read so many rock star stories, and the author says she is married into the business so of course I was interested!
This story is about Ryder and Lexie, the drummer and keyboardist/singer for the band Hard Chord.
They have been playing together for seven years and Ryder never saw Lexie as anyone but his little sister. Until one night she took her shirt off and it screwed with his head. As for Lexie, she’s been in love with Ryder for years.
So that’s my summary of the novel, now did I like this story. Yes, I really did. The reason I gave four stars is for a couple of reasons.
First, there is a medical issue with Lexie that really wasn’t “solved”, it’s just kind of hanging out there and it is a road block for them at one point but then it just is okay with everyone. It was kind of strange to me there wasn’t any plan or even a diagnosis. For such a big issue, it just kind of fell flat for me. Then the obsession of safety from Ryder came out of left field for me.
Why did it overwhelm him once they were together and not while Lexie and he were friends? I guess I didn’t understand that.
Then Hit Man, his name threw me in the beginning. I had a hard time figuring out that hit man and jace were two separate people at first.
Luckily they are two people because they were both awesome and funny.
I loved the insight from the drummers perspective, the internal jukebox and all that. It was interesting to read about. I never knew a bassist and drummer had to sync that way. I’m not a musician so there’s my excuse.
Overall, the story was good, the characters were interesting, some things confused me or didn’t interest me. But in the end I really liked this book and am actually reading book 3 right now!
My advice: KEEP READING!!!

3 1/2 Stars!

I struggled with this one but it turned out to be a good read. I was excited to get Hard Rock to read. It's my first book by M.J Roberts. With the author being new to me author I didn't know what to expect with the writing style. I did struggle quite a bit in the beginning because he flow and writing style was different then I was used to and I wasn't sure if I liked it. I also struggled to connect with the characters at first too. Honestly I was thinking of putting it in the didn't finish pile when I took a break and before restarting I reread the blurb. The blurb was originally the reason I wanted to read this one and it was also the reason I picked it back up. When I picked it back up it was easier to get into the story and feel for the characters.

Ryder and Lexi are band mates. Jase is also in the band and Ryder's best friend and Lexi's brother. Ryder and Lexi has always had feelings for each other but they never realized the other had the same feelings. Ryder has a tragic past and he has walls up. Lexi has her issues to. These two have ups and down. Both characters have layers and as I read more I got to know more about them and liked them more. And even though I struggled with the writing style and flow in the beginning by the end of the book I really appreciated what the writing style brought to the story. This was a good read. if you pick this one up and are struggling with it I suggest you take a break, regroup, and then pick it back up again because it's worth the read.

Fabulous! Not the usual rocker story with lots going on in this best friend's sister, friends to lovers AND the forbidden band mates romance. Great start to a new series with wild and intriguing characters that has sexy drummer, Ryder and singer/keyboardist, Lexi up first. Finally, after years of crushing on her older brother's best friend Lexi dream comes true when Ryder sees her as a woman. She's stoked and a force that goes for what she wants. I loved Ryder and his drummer mentality and quirky mannerisms. He reminds me of a college drummer friend of mine. Always in his head with timing and moving hands and feet to a beat that only he hears. His care and treatment of Lexi is wonderful. Sexy and dreamy! Until he has a freak out and his worry about Lexi is overwhelming. Plus they have to deal with brother and best friend, Jase. What will he think about their relationship and how will it affect the band? And there's slut-puppy Hit Man with his charm and charisma. How will he deal with the new coupling of his band mates? The drama ensues with some heart wrenching and real life issues. The writing was interesting and really good with great character development and wonderful storytelling. I was surprised the band didn't have a manager with their massive touring schedule and large arena shows. Maybe a new character will join the crew and give Jase or Hit Man a love interest. I look forward to the next installment in this new terrific series by a marvelous author. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.

This one was rough for me; I have never read a book with our mc as a drummer or any musician, so I was super interested in seeing where this would go. I didn't even read the blurb.
I think I should have. It was a challenging book to finish, and I am not sure why I did. I always tell myself you don't have to finish the book. Yet, I forced myself with this one. I wanted it to be a lot more than it was. It was missing something that would have made me love it, and sadly I don't know what it is yet. It just didn't vibe for me.
Ryder is a character who deals with a lot. He does not realize he has a problem fully, that is, until he lashes out, and his best friend, his bandmate, makes him get help. I loved how his best friend made him get help. Sometimes we need that friend that will be with us in our worse and best times.
Lexi is sweet, sassy, and has a massive crush on Ryder. However, she seems to have issues herself.
When the two end up acting on their feelings one day, you know this can go either one of two ways.
The story seemed to be told mainly in Ryder's p.o.v. We get a snippet of what Lexi is thinking during certain times.
I honestly didn't like how Lexi would act when she couldn't "get there," for real. Before anyone tears me apart, I don't have this problem, and I am sure there are women out there who do. But wouldn't you go to the doctor to ask questions? Maybe it is me.
I did like the banter between the characters that happened. The secondary characters were unique in my eyes.

I received a review copy of this book from the author through Voracious Readers. I have read “rock star” romances before, but this book caught me by surprise. It is different from previous books I have read. I was expecting over the top shenanigans and a very lighthearted read. Instead I found this book to be a very emotional read with many layers and an intriguing romance. The emotions are complex throughout and the story deals with serious issues - such as the death of a sibling, PTSD, addiction and survivor’s guilt. The plot also touches on family and friendships and loyalty. The intimate scenes are sizzling hot and steamy and the chemistry between Ryder and Lexi is through the roof! I also enjoyed the behind the scenes look at life on the road for an up and coming rock band. The characters, including the secondary characters, are all very real and likeable and intriguing. They make mistakes, misunderstand each other, but through it all have each other’s backs. I particularly liked the teasing and camaraderie between the characters - and the prevalent humour throughout keeps the story from becoming too maudlin. This book is a decent start to a new series and I definitely enjoyed it.

I have recently got into rock star romance books and have read around 18 in a row. Most of them I have enjoyed, some more then others, several quite a lot.

But, unfortunately this was one I couldn't wait till it was done. I kept looking at the percentage of how much was left in the book.

The characters felt like they were 15 years old and I had to go back to actually see how old they were - in their 30'a and mid 20's. Some of the phrases and conversations were so hard to even get through them, because they were so juvenile and tedious.

It also abruptly ended with no resolution to Lexi's issue that Ryder was trying to solve. Not sure if this picks up in the next book or not. Initially I am thinking I am not buying it, until I read an excerpt. This 2nd book looks so much better from the small amount I read. The plot and and new characters pulled me in just in a few short pages, much more then the full first book ever did.

I really wouldn't recommend the first book, but you need the background for the 2nd one. And I am up in the air about getting the 2nd one, because I don't want to get burned again even though it looks so much better then the first with the preview.

Book 43 of of year completed.
Rock Hard by M J Roberts.

🧸🧸🧸

Firstly, thank you to the author for this gifted book in exchange for an honest review.

Ryder is in a successful rock band Hard Chord with his bandmates Jase, Lexi and Hit Man. When Ryder and Lexi hit it off on a break in San Diego they are putting everything on the line. Along side this Ryder is internally battling a past family tragedy that could end his new found love and drive him to the edge of his sanity.

I've read very few rock band romances and this was done in quite a unique way and written with absolute passion. The writer clearly knows her music and it's evident as Ryder and pals are so invested in their music. I was taken in by the character development and loved the bond between band mates and also other bands that came in to the story. The romance was actually quite tastefully done compared to other similar novels I've read.

Two things detracted from the writing for me. The overuse of the "synesthesia" and also overuse of the "internal juke box". They just both seemed to interrupt the flow of the scenes far too many times.

A good read if you are in to this type of thing and there are several books in the series written from the POV of different band mates.

When I first heard about this book from the author I was a little scared because all I knew about it was music, concerts and passion. So I started reading...
There is a band called Hard Chord and we follow the story from the band's drummer Ryder's point of view. We got to know the characters really fast and everybody has different attributes that I found fascinating. The whole book is about a passionate love, what is like to be a rock star and make a living from music.
I always loved music so I was really interested in the plot at first and it was really a fast pace read for me because of this theme.
We can find secrets and tough topics and a little bit of lgbtq+ references.
It was really colorful, the love scenes were perfectly implemented and the most engaging moments were when we could find the vast variety of song references from different bands and singers, from new to old songs, from rock genre to folk music. There were also movies and series which I could relate to.
The only thing I could find surprising when there was a beautifully written train of thought and all of a sudden an inappropriate word comes in from nowhere.
In conclusion the whole book was refreshing, amazing and sad at the same time.

This book was a wonderful first book in a series about the interconnected lives of a band. Ryder is the drummer and best friends with the bass player in the band. When one night in a hotel with the lead singer, sister of his best friend, wakes him up to what has been in front of him for years, he tries hard not to let his newfound awareness of Lexi interfere. The way to do that, deny anything has changed.
When they are alone for a little over a week, Lexi finally lets him know that she wants and has wanted him for years. They agree to enjoy the time they have and to not let anything affect the band. He wants to come clean to Jase, but she doesn't want to. He agrees to give her a few days, but doesn't feel right about it. When Ryder freaks out about her safety and tries to control her, even with a mental break, she can't figure out what is going on. How will Jase and Hitman react when they find out about the relationship? How will Ryder feel when he finds out about the one thing that makes Lexi feel like a monster? Why is Ryder so worried about Lexi's safety (the reason is very sad)? His brothers and the way they get through to him was wonderful. Even the storyline of Hitman and Jase kept me wanting more and I can't wait to read more about this band.

This book was a really interesting insight into the world of an up and coming rock band that have had their share of the limelight but aren't quite famous enough to have the world to know who they are. This isn't just your basic love story either. It's far from it and although you know there is a love story at the forefront, it isn't all that this story is.

Ryder and Lexi are a totally into each other and although you see it. It's a secret that they are keeping from the band. There are rules. Which I think suck and I am so glad they break them. They're a great couple and totally suited. The main problem is they are band mates and Lexi is also Jase's little sister who is also in the band and Ryder's best friend.

Anyway apart from that the story is full of heartbreak and sadness. All from the past and it revolves around Ryder. Something he feels guilty for and something he really couldn't help. It's a long read but a good read. One that kept me gripped and entertained. The supporting characters are brilliant and make this story what it is.

I really recommend this book and I can't wait for the next book.

Rock Hard: Chord Brothers book 1

Rock Hard: Chord Brothers, book 1 is a Rockstar drummer romance. It's the first time I've read a book like this! The author reached out to me to read this and leave an honest review.

Ryder is a drummer, and Lexi is a singer in the same band. Everyone knows you don't sleep with your band mates, or your best friends sister. Ryder breaks both those rules and has to deal with the consequences.

I liked how the author demonstrated the monotony of what it is like when a band is on tour. The same scene repeats itself multiple times, with very little variation. But when Ryder and Lexi are together, things are fresh and new, breaking up the monotony.

Ryder constantly has music playing in his head, which was a little overwhelming for me. It was very distracting to have plot and conversations be broken up by random (though thematically relevant) song lyrics.

The author clearly knows her stuff when it comes to band life, and it all felt like an acurrate representation of what the relationship between band members is.

I didn't particularly feel drawn to any characters though, as I thought they were kind of childish to be honest.

This was a best friend's little sister rocker romance. The author makes a lot of band/song references in the book and about 90% flew over my head. She also uses some technical musician terms I did not understand.

Lexi Evanovich is Jase's little sister. She is also lead singer of the band Hard Chord. She has had a crush on Ryder Chord since she was little.

Ryder Chord is the drummer and songwriter for the band. He has a tragic past which is still affecting him today. He knows the three rules of hooking up with bandmates but makes an exception for Lexi.

It all starts in Detroit and the two of them having to share a room for the night when Ryder first sees Lexi as a hot female. Later they have to spend a week and a half together in California and they give in to their mutual attraction of course hiding this relationship from the rest of the band. Ryder eventually tells Jade and Lexi confesses to him a few weeks later. They have several ups and downs which are exasperated by his past but do get their HEA in the end.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ryder Chord knows the rule, you never sleep with one of your bandmates, but the person that made that rule has never met a woman like Lexi. She is a temptation he cannot ignore, one that comes with complicated written all over her. Not only is she his band mate, but also the little sister of his best friend and fellow bandmate. And if that isn't reason enough to stay away he doesn't know what is... but even with that warning label attached, he doesn't stay away. And now he is paying the price!

Rock Hard introduces us to bandmates Lexi and Ryder, and takes us on their journey to finding that forever kind of love. But theirs's isn't an easy fall, as they have a lot of complications and rules standing in their way that they have to conquer first. It's a forbidden romance brimming with feels, secrets, passion, and a bit of angst to torture the heart.

I love rock star romances and I've got to say that Rock Hard definitely checked all the boxes for me, it's well penned words kept me thoroughly entertained the whole way through! Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

Readable

First, the typos normally I'm the first to say disregard them but there were just too many then add in the many missing words. This causes too much re-reading a sentence for comprehension.

Secondly, this was pretty good, the storyline, Ryder's tragic past made for good reading, heartfelt; my only issue was Lexi. What caused her issue? IMO it went on way too long with no end in sight.

Third, Hit Man, the whole cheating thing but yet he loves his baby Mama, cheating should be listed in the synopsis as well as a MM relationship. Total honesty.

Lastly, I love Ryder's constant mind song referral but if you don't know the song and/or artist, it's a major distraction to look it up.

This is a different rock star romance read, the style is unique and may be for you. I can see how many would love it but since I read a lot of them I need it to be more polished. The MCs connection was weak and more on Ryder's end then Lexi, you're told how she's always loved him but it's not felt. I just needed a little more. Will i read Jase's story, probably not. I'm sorry.

As lead singer of Dirt Cherry, he can get whoever he wants. The thing is the one woman he wants is trying her hardest to stay away from him. He knows a lot of women want him because of his stardom as a musician but he wants something different with Jenna. Now Jenna, however doesn't want anything to do with music but Venom is one person she cannot ignore anymore. She is determined to just be friends because of her past but Venom has other ideas to change her mind. Have to say I expected more from these two just seemed to fast in my opinion. Jenna kept changing her mind in every way actually kind of felt sorry for Venom. I mean in the beginning he seems cocky but once we read more of him we see a man who just wants love. One thing for sure is to read the series in order, there were some things that seemed confusing and off story for me but all in all it was okay.

"I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own."

MJ Roberts has her own unique point of view. I’ve read a lot of her work and it is definitely not your average romance novel. There’s a genuineness to her work. Where other authors can sometimes seem to churn out scenes that all sound the same (even within the same book), Roberts has mastered the art of giving you new experiences with each and every scene; you feel as though you’re discovering a rare a beautiful thing each time.

Her latest series featuring Hard Chord delves into themes that are close to home for her, giving this series (and her prelude story How To Bang) a colour and depth that rings true. But don’t be expecting all the twists and turns! She’ll definitely surprise you. The emotions stab into you at times, taking you on a journey through the harrowing past of a close knit band of musicians, through to the light at the end of the tunnel.

A great read and Rock Harder, the next in the series is just as strong.

This book took me by surprise in all the best ways. At it's heart it is the story of a traveling rock band made up of friends who are really family in all the ways that matter.

The focus is on the transition of Lexi and Ryder from friends to lovers and how that might work in the dynamics of the band, especially when it breaks all the codes set up to keep the music flowing.

Separately, Lexi and Ryder are dealing with some really heavy issues. There's mystery around whether or not Lexi's ever gets resolved, and I'm not sure how they'll pick it up in the next book since the focus is shifting, but I'd love to know! Ryder's point of view and thought process are a fascinating lens to see through as the story unfolds. Just beautiful writing around how he sees the world!

Recommend this if you like a good Rockstar friends to lovers story!
