Secret lineage, a ruthless vampire, and forbidden love.

Willow Stevens dreams of stardom are eclipsed by the real nightmares of a sinister man haunting her dreams. Unbeknownst to her, Eli Walker, her hot but snobbish co-worker, may know the reason nightmares plague her, but their history shows he is more prone to reject her, than help her.

Then Willow passes out at work only to wake in Eli's apartment. There she has her chance to learn more about her heritage. But, knowing why the vampire king stalks her doesn't make the nightmares disappear. If anything, they become more real as she now faces off against a slew of creatures she'd always believed were myth.

That Eli is one of those creatures is just her luck. Secret witch guild or not, his natural ways are casting spells her heart can't escape. As a Protector his only focus should be her safety. Anything else is forbidden. He plans to stay in task, but some women break a man, or tempt him to break the rules.

Can Eli keep Willow alive and safe from the vampires long enough for her to grow her own powers or will both cast aside rules for a reckless passion that will only lead to danger?

I hardly ever read books as fast as I did Awakened. I was hooked, had to know WHAT THE HELL, WHY THE HELL and HOW THE HELL! It’s really good!

Paranormal romance. black woman/ white man. 1 sex scene at the end. Not my thing. I listened to the audiobook. The voice actors did fine when they were saying their own lines, but when it was time to say the love interest's lines, they sounded kinda silly. Unclear why no one told protag that Guardians aren't allowed to date her. Seemed like the story could still have dramatic tension even if she knew.

Not very good, not totally horrendous, but not great either. The book has an interesting world and premise and an absolutely gorgeous cover, but it needs more editing, the writing is amateurish at times, and the transitions are often clunky. Plus, I had some serious suspension of disbelief issues with the plot and I found both Willow and Eli unlikable. She's 26 and he's even older, but they both act like children, and she's especially self-centered, bratty, and easily manipulated.

As for the problem being able to suspend belief, which is something exceptionally hard for a book to overcome, it was two-fold. One, the book goes on and on about how important it is for her to learn to defend herself. So, it made no sense to me that the Protectors had followed her years and years instead of teaching her to defend herself until it's basically too late. It's not like they didn't know there was a threat.

Secondly, all of the angst around the romance subplot could have and (and IMO should have) been completely bypassed if someone had simply told Willow that Protectors are forbidden from having relationships with Oracles. I don't mean this as telling the author how to write her book, simply that as a reader I couldn't understand why the characters were creating all the unneeded drama and hurt when it would make a million times more sense than the BS lies Eli rolls out for her

Lastly, it's also the only book I've ever read with a warning before the epilogue like this:
If you plan to continue with this series, there's an epilogue...but I suggest you stop here if you don't like cliffhangers and don't plan to continue. Thanks for reading!

It seems pointless because, even if you don't read the epilogue (which I didn't since I have no intention of continuing the series), the book ends with Willow injured, and both she and Eli unconscious. So, it's already a cliffhanger.

All in all, I'm sorry to say the book just wasn't a winner for me.

This book was fun. I felt like there were some elements that could have made the story move a bit smoother, but I can tell you that this one is a page turner.
I'm not sure I will continue, despite the doozy of a cliffhanger at the end. I may with time.

This is an urban fantasy that has a nice spin on the genre. Willow Stevens is living her life in Nashville, TN, working in a call center during the day and singing in various venues at night. Despite all of the accolades she seems to get, she still hasn’t caught the attention of any of the people in the music industry. One day at work she passes out and when she comes to she is in her co-worker’s apartment along with other people that she has interacted with or befriended in her daily life. It turns out that Eli and the others that she has considered friends are witches, except Max who is werewolf (though since he posed as her dog shapeshifter might be a better description). They inform her that she is an oracle and that the man she has been dreaming about is Killian, and he is the head of the vampires. He has been invading her dreams in an attempt to learn who she is and where she is at so that he can control her powers and stay in power. All of the witches and Max are part of a group know as the Protectors.

Okay, so this is a book that I have mixed feelings about this book. It is one that I was excited about and then forgot about. I picked this for my “A” book for my digital a to z challenge. So I am very glad that I finally got to it. It was not exactly what I was hoping for but overall I did enjoy it. I really liked the fact that the main character was black, unfortunately I didn’t always like her. Willow is 26 and all of this is new to her. Even though she knows all of the people traveling with her, she didn’t know the truth about who she was or who they were. Even thought Eli had not said a word to her, until he revealed everything to her, she is attracted to her. Well they are attracted to each other, but any relationship between them is forbidden because of the protector’s commandments.

This entire story is about the group trying to stay a step ahead of Kilian and to train Willow and teach her to use her Oracle powers, and make other discoveries along the way. There is a hot and cold thing going on between Eli and Willow as they struggle with their feelings and Eli with his duty. (Which I really liked. I mean I know that they would end up together, but I was enjoying the back and forth and was looking forward to watch them work it out and stumble towards and around each other.) But Willow is a bit of a brat. She is 26 but often she reads as teenager. Petty. I would have enjoyed this one a whole lot more if we actually got to know all of the characters a lot better than we did - right now they are just props for the story, there isn’t much depth to them.

I knew that this story was definitely going to end in a cliffhanger 75% in - suspected that it would earlier than that. And I was fine with it, because I was into the story. While I wasn’t sold on the characters (I didn’t really connect with any of them, and I don’t think we were given much opportunity to get to know them.) I was sold on the story. Until the epilogue…. That absolutely ruined it for meet seemed out of character for both Willow and Eli. It was a complete switch (that happened too quickly) from trying to honor the commandments to love. Not just interest or lust but love. Leaving the letter and the Killiam scene for the epilogue works. But he sex scene reads as hastily thrown in and not something that truly adds to the story -at this point.

Will I continue this series? Yes, definitely, just maybe not right now.

Give me more! This was a fabulous kickoff to the Oracle Chronicles. Willow has a lot of quirky charm and spunk as she learns about the world of magic and her role in it. Her love interest, Eli is super sexy in a refined, duty before pleasure, sort of way. This is definitely a slow burn romance leading to some steamy scenes worth waiting for. I especially love some of the secondary characters and their relationships. Moni Boyce wrote an intriguing story with a creative premise. It drew me in, held my interest, and I can't wait for the next book!

Great start 👍👍👍

I really don't like cliffhangers but this was worth it. This is a great start to a new series and I cannot wait for the next installment. I hope the wait between books is not long and the author continues to deliver. I will leave a more detailed review after book 2.

I won’t rate this as I didn’t end up finishing it but just noting down that i didn’t finish it because the transitions between scenes felt clunky and difficult to follow . The characters weren’t likable and relatable so I stopped at about 30%

3.5/5! I really enjoy all of the characters and finding more out about Willow. I think the author could have elaborated more and made the first book longer. I will be reading the second book soon! I love Kindle because it helps me find indie authors to support!

A really enjoyable urban fantasy - with lots of steamy romance. I loved the idea of Oracles being a part of the supernatural universe, and the community of Protectors is lovely, too. I could have done with more magic and less romance, but that's just my personal preference. Very fun read.

I hosted a spot on the blitz tour a few weeks ago for Awakened, and the book sparked my interest. Let’s be real, this one has a lot of the things that call out to me, right? There’s murder – or at least, there are some murder-adjacent activities taking place. (Does it count if they’re vampires?) There are all kinds of supernatural and paranormal happenings, and the people come from a variety of backgrounds. (I have to wonder about books where everyone looks the same. Don’t they worry about lethal gene factors?)

Anyway. That’s a tangent.

Awakened didn’t disappoint, not at all. I read this one on the train back from RWA Nationals and there were more twists and turns than I could possibly have imagined. Willow’s background delves deep into not only ancient history, but into the less savory parts of American history too. Willow herself, while falling into the trope of the “chosen one with the magical girl powers,” doesn’t just suddenly have these abilities and know how to use them. No, she struggles with them and has to truly work to know what to do.

At the same time, there’s a healthy dose of realism. While Willow is definitely new to this supernatural world, she’s not some concussed bunny rabbit who can only hang around and hope to be rescued. She’s resourceful, she’s cunning, she’s smart, and she’s not some prize. She pays attention to what’s going on around her, she asks questions, and she comes up with a solution to help the people fighting on her behalf. Willow is no damsel in distress.

In short, I love her.

So does Eli. Since it’s Forbidden, capital intentional, for someone in Eli’s position to be in a relationship with someone he’s protecting, he tries to minimize the chances they’ll actually be together by acting like an utter dick toward her. And honestly, in any other book, I’d probably throw it across the room and cheerfully consign Eli to the flames of Hell or the elevator lines at Nationals, either one is fine.

The thing is, Boyce did a fantastic job of presenting Eli’s point of view and showing his feelings for her. She showed the strain Eli was under, his need to follow the dictates of the Protector traditions and his desperation to keep Willow safe. I honestly empathized with Eli. I’m still not sure why Willow decided she was attracted to him, but I couldn’t hate him the way Boyce presented him.

The side characters are all ably and sympathetically shown. One of them kind of creeped me out a little, but I don’t want to give away their identity. I want that to be a surprise for you. I know I freaked the heck out when I found out.

If I had to pick one thing that gave me a truly hard time, it was the scene at the end. Boyce did tell us not to read it if we planned to continue the series – and I do. But I was also planning to review the book, so I felt duty bound to read it.

It was a sex scene, and I get that she added it in to give some kind of closure to the book for people who didn’t plan to continue with the series. It just didn’t match with the tone of the rest of the book at all, and it felt awkward and uncomfortable as a result.

So, don’t read past the point where the author says to stop reading, and you should be fine. Just sit back, and enjoy the ride. You won’t regret Awakened.

So this is my first 2 star rating using CAWPILE. I didn't really connect to the characters. I didn't understand where the connection between Eli and (wow I just read this and have completely forgotten the main character's name. I think that tells you just how much I didn't connect with the characters.) the main character came from. As far as they explain it they both fall in love with the other person without ever having spoken to each other. Like what is that? Also, the writing just was seriously lacking for me, and the logic was very questionable. We would have scenes where I was like whoa where did this come from? Why are the characters behaving this way? It was so weird. I liked the idea behind the plot, and the atmosphere was good, but everything else was lacking for me. I don't think I'll continue with the series. I did read the supposed cliffhanger, but even that didn't catch my interest or leave me needing to know what happens next. Overall, I read this on a recommendation from Riley Marie a youtuber I like, and I think she made it sound better than what I actually read. I was expecting such cuteness from Max and the main character's friendship, but it just seemed like we barely got any interaction from them. I was also expecting a possible love triangle or kidnapping in regards to Killian. I was also expecting this great slow burn forbidden romance, but it just missed the mark. We were given practically nothing throughout the book, and then the ending was way to rushed to appreciate. I don't know. I guess this is the first book in a while that I finished even though I didn't really like it. I think it was because it was so short. By the time the book finished is normally where I would DNF a book.

Beautifully crafted, Awakened by Moni Boyce is sure to be a favorite in anyone's library. I was immediately captivated by the wide range, but never boring cast of characters and their mission. Willow and Eli dominated the story with a relationship that had me cheering for them from the start. With Willow's strong attitude and Eli's sense of duty and honor, I was enthralled to watch their story unfold as they took to the road.

If you love a killer storyline with a sweet romance and a splash of amazing fight scenes, then this is definitely the story for you. Moni Boyce tells the story with a uniquely fresh voice that left me thinking about her characters long after I had finished reading the book.

I can't wait to see what this author comes out with next.

This book is awesome! I just finished reading. There are so many layers involved! Beyond the romantic element (which I probably enjoyed reading a little too much), it's also about a journey of self-discovery, which is why I find the main character, Willow, to be so relatable. I also love how this story is woven into actual historical events that make it feel real. I'm looking forward to what Moni Boyce produces next! No spoilers obviously but....I have questions that need answers! Moni has a talented way of grabbing you into the story and keeping you in suspense while still satisfying your thirst for action. Highly recommend it!

This is my first paranormal romance I read in a long time and I wasn’t disappointed. Willow is a young woman who finds out she’s an oracle while on the run from a centuries old vampire. To make matters worse, visions of death haunt her dreams.

Willow is someone that I found myself rooting for. I loved all the characters and I can’t wait for book two. This fast paced, quick read ends with a satisfyingly steaming climax.

Good mix

Good mix of suspense and mystery. Noni is trying to find her way in a world she knows nothing about. Eli is coming in as a great super hero character.

3.5 stars for me
I got this book by attending a “meet the author” party hosted by Moni Boyce, and I was pumped to try her work!
I won a couple books following interracial couples and strong black female leads which got me very excited. Since it had been so long since I read a supernatural/paranormal romance I started with Awakened.
I’m pretty picky when it comes to supernatural books. Things can get pretty limitless pretty fast but I found Awakened to be a fast paced, easy read.
This story follows Willow, an average woman who discovers she is anything but. We follow her as she is taught how to access her inner power by the Protectors who have been assigned to guard her without her knowledge. Her surprisingly quick acceptance of her lineage helped the story progress quickly.
Early on you discover a few of her character flaws include her nosiness and her unchecked violence. She flat out socks the hero of the story, Eli, across the face a few times. Letting her frustration get the better of her. Eli likes her fiery however, but holds himself back because coven rules dictate he not have a relationship with her.
I wasn’t totally invested in the characters. The way Eli and Willow dance around each other would have frustrated me if I really “shipped” them together but there was never that urgency with these two. I was more swept up in the story surrounding them. I hope to grow more attached to the characters in the sequels.

Awakened was a good start to this series full of supernaturals, a bit of romance, and action.

Willow's life is upended when she learns she’s an oracle being hunted by the king of vampires who has been haunting her dreams for many years. Her Protectors - a group of witches and a werewolf - must keep her safe and her powers out of the wrong hands.

I like Willow and how she begins to evolve as she learns more about her past and powers. She’s been alone for a long time, so I like that she kind of finds a place to belong again with the Protectors. Sometimes she did come across as flat, so I’m hoping we get to dive deeper into her character more in the next book.

Eli is also an interesting character. As the leader of the Protectors, he’s torn between his duty and his feelings for Willow, which becomes a major source of contention.

The world building was good and easy to immerse within. I did wish there was more action happening because there were times that I was bored. But since this is the first book of a series the minimum shown was fine.

I really wish Killian, the vampire searching for Willow, had more presence. I wanted to know more about him from Killian directly rather than what other characters say about him.

Awakened was a good first book. I absolutely love the cover; it’s gorgeous! I think this series is heading in a good direction plot-wise and has a lot of potential.

I enjoyed this, even though it ended with a cliffhanger. Normally, that's the kiss of death.

I enjoyed the story overall, but some parts, just...

If the Protectors all knew she would one day need to know combat skills, meditation skills, and such; why didn't they use all that time to teach her. They didn't have to tell her she was an Oracle to have the neighbor (A protector) suggest taking Self Defense, or Mixed Martial Arts classes together. Maybe Yoga/Tai Chi...things to help learn to empty the mind to allow other things in.

Some parts were, confusing at times. The instance of physical abuse...still shook by it. Everyone thinking the young girl should just forgive Mom and let's be friends. No. Mom was WRONG! I'm sorry just doesn't cut it.

3* from me.

This is a series I MAY come back to at some point in the future. It's a quick read and a fun premise but I didn't fall in love with it, so I feel no immediately rush to finish it immediately.

Witches, werewolves, vampires - an urban fantasy with a sprinkling of smut - this should have ticked all my boxes, but I think I always want these things a bit darker and angsty-er than they end up being.

This is a captivating read for a couple of hours of your day, I just wish it had thrilled me more.

Cover buy

I liked the story from the beginning. It could use a professional development and copy edit. If you can endure that, it is a decent story. I liked the cover which is what drew me to it but it is misleading. The girl looks like a teenager yet the book says she is twenty-six and the author wrote her younger. There was a lot of over explaining that became suffering by the end. Also the epilogue did not match the story and felt like a completely different genre. Overall it wasn't bad but I will not continue with the series.

This was a really fun witchy paranormal romance! I felt like the balance between plot and romance was really good - I prefer romance over everything but the plot was engaging so I had fun with it regardless. It's a forbidden romance between Willow who's an oracle and Eli who's a witch and her protector. So it's basically a bodyguard romance which I always adore. And they can't be together because the oracle's protectors are forbidden from having a relationship with them. I really liked the two main characters and it was a super quick easy read, so I definitely recommend it!

Fantastic edge of seat read. Loved the unique story and the characters, especially the forbidden love between Willow and Eli. The book is filled with action, adventure, suspense, mystery and forbidden romance ending in a massive cliffhanger ready for the next story. I cannot wait to find out what happens next.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I didn't realize this novel was a YA urban fantasy until I started reading it. I got about 8% in and couldn't keep going. The characters are incredibly flat and I can already tell that I will hate the forced romance. The writing is something I might have done myself in highschool. That isn't something I want to be reminded of. I didn't finish this one.

The plus is that the front cover looked really good. So props to the cover artist for an amazing job. It's why I picked up the book.
