THE STRIVE INTERNSHIP

Due to overwhelming popularity and an unprecedented number of applications received, applications for the 2024 Strive Internship are now closed.

The award-winning Strive Internship programme offers paid work experience placements to Black, Asian and minority ethnic university students across organisations in the West of England. Our internships offer opportunities for students to fully immerse themselves in placements with partner organisations for 6–8 weeks, gaining hands-on experience, building confidence, and learning new skills.

The programme was first established in 2020 through a partnership between Hargreaves Lansdown, the Bristol Mayor, Bristol City Council and UWE and has since provided over 90 paid internships to students across 25 organisations, in a range of different industries. In 2022 we were thrilled to receive an Institute of Student Employers award for the scheme.

Our next internships will take place in Summer 2024. The following organisations are already signed up to offer internships:

Background

In 2020, against the backdrop of the pandemic and rising unemployment amongst young Black students, Chris Hill, former CEO of Hargreaves Lansdown and Marvin Rees, Bristol Mayor, identified a need to take action to create opportunities for Black students.

Inspired by the simplicity of the #10000BlackInterns initiative, Hargreaves Lansdown launched the ‘West of England Black Interns Pilot’, in partnership with Bristol City Council and The Mayor’s Office. The programme created 45 paid internship opportunities, across 18 organisations in the region for Black students living or studying in the West of England.

Building on the success of our pilot programme, the Strive Internship was created, broadening our focus to offer a paid internship opportunity to Black, Asian and minority ethnic university students, living or studying in Bristol, Bath and North-East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. It is a cross-sector internship programme offering a range of opportunities for interns to gain valuable work experience within an organisation and build their professional network.

The programme also includes opportunities for interns to attend valuable skill-building sessions designed to enhance career confidence and provide opportunities for interns to connect with each other.

Key information for students considering applying for the Strive Internship

  • How do I know if I’m eligible to apply?

    Students eligible for the Strive Internship Programme need to meet the following criteria:

    • Be a Black, Asian or minority ethnic student.
    • Be living or studying an undergraduate degree in the region or have graduated from University within the last 12 months.
    • Be available to work full-time from June 2024 for a minimum of six weeks.
  • How do I apply for the Strive Internship?

    Applications for our 2024 Internship are now open. Please complete and submit this short eligibility form. We will assess your eligibility for the programme and if suitable we will send you an email with further instructions on the application process.

    Please note that we will close applications once we have received a sufficient number of applications.

  • What are the stages of the recruitment and selection process?

    After an initial application sift, successful candidates will be invited to share their internship preferences from the list of available organisations and placements. We will try to match opportunities with role preferences where possible, but this is not guaranteed. We encourage students to be open-minded as all of our internships will give you an opportunity to gain new skills, experience and understanding that will help you grow your career. Once your eligibility for the programme has been confirmed, the next stage will be to complete a short application for review, consisting of submission of your CV and response to 3 application questions. These questions will focus on your career motivations and awareness of your own strengths and development areas.

    Successful candidates will then be invited to share their internship preferences from the list of available organisations and placements. We will try to match you with one of your role preferences where possible, but this is not guaranteed. We encourage students to be open-minded as all our internships will give you an opportunity to gain new skills, experiences, understanding and connections that will help you grow your career.

    If you are successful in reaching the final stage of the assessment process, this will be run by the third-party organisation offering the internship. You’ll receive more information from the organisation directly about this stage of the process and what you need to do.

  • When will the Strive Internship commence?

    Internships will take place over the summer period and will last between 6 and 8 weeks, depending on the placement organisation. More information about internship dates will be provided in the final stages of the recruitment and selection process which will take place in early Spring.

  • Which organisations are offering internships?

    Organisations across Bristol, Bath and North-East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are eligible to offer internships as part of the programme, which means that internships on offer are across a range of organisations and sectors. We are still in the process of finalising our partner organisations for our 2024 intake but have already confirmed the following organisations:

    In previous years we have had over 15 different organisations offering internship opportunities.

  • How many internships are on offer?

    We are still in the process of finalising our internship opportunities for 2024, however we will cap the number of internships on offer to 30. This is so we can guarantee great quality internships and high-quality wrap-around support for the programme. This means you are not guaranteed an internship if you apply.

  • Why should I get involved and apply for the internship?

    You’ll have the opportunity to get ahead by having a paid internship where you’ll:

  • What happens to the data and information provided during the application process?

    Any personal information interns provide will first be used by HL to ensure that they meet the programme criteria and basic requirements. This will take place via review of the application form and CVs. Personal data processed by HL will be handled in accordance with our Privacy Notice.

    If successful during the initial stage of the recruitment process, the CV and cover letters of interns will be shared with a third-party organisation who will run the final assessment stage. Any personal data provided to third party organisations providing internships will be handled in accordance with their Privacy Notices and data protection obligations.

Key information for organisations considering signing up to offer internships as part of the Strive Internship Programme

  • How do organisations get involved?

    If you are an organisation based in Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire then you can pledge to take on one or more students for 6-8 weeks starting in the Summer of 2024 by emailing us at striveinterns@hl.co.uk. The deadline for signing up is 31st December 2023.

  • How will the programme’s activities be coordinated?

    This programme is being coordinated by Hargreaves Lansdown and a steering group with members across Bristol City Council, and University of the West of England.

    Hargreaves Lansdown and the steering group will be responsible for, amongst other things, encouraging firms’ participation, advertising the opportunity and running initial sifts of applications. Organisations will be responsible for coordinating their own organisation specific recruitment process for the final stage of assessment. Hargreaves Lansdown will run briefing sessions with organisations to confirm the process, roles, and responsibilities.

  • How will interns be sourced and selected?

    Hargreaves Lansdown and the steering group will promote the initiative through universities based in the West of England.

    Hargreaves Lansdown will ensure candidates meet the programme and basic assessment criteria (motivations, interests and self-awareness).

    The steering group will then distribute applications amongst participating organisations who will run their own assessment process for the final stage of recruitment based on their preferred processes and criteria. They will then select at least one applicant for an internship.

  • What should interns be paid?

    At a minimum, interns must be paid the Real Living Wage for the region. Organisations that are unable to offer the Real Living Wage will not be eligible to participate in the programme.

  • Is there a requirement to offer a full time job to the intern(s) at the end of the internship?

    No. The aim of the program is simply to provide a life-changing experience in the workplace by broadening horizons through great quality work experience. If an internship were to lead to a permanent role, that would be a fantastic outcome but is not a requirement.

  • We have never had interns before. How will we be supported to ensure we offer a great internship experience?

    All organisations will be briefed to ensure they understand how the Strive Internship programme works and to help them understand the building blocks of offering a great experience for your intern. Organisations are also encouraged to share knowledge and learnings with each other.

  • How will the internship be advertised?

    The Strive Internship steering group will work with universities based in the region to attract students to apply to the programme. We would encourage organisations to promote the programme on their social media too and will share digital assets with you.
