The International Organisation for Migration are hosting an online panel discussion on the Impact of the Nationality and Borders Bill on the UK’s Response to Modern Slavery. The panellists will discuss the key clauses on Modern Slavery contained within the Bill and their potential consequences in relation to prosecution, prevention and protection. The panellists will also reflect on why the issue of Modern Slavery is being addressed through legislation focused on immigration. The discussion will be supported by IOM UK’s analysis of key NRM data in relation to some of the reforms proposed in the Bill. Register here.

We are delighted to be standing together with partners to launch A Model for Scotland.  Commercial sexual exploitation persists as a result of how women are viewed by society.  In their Equally Safe Strategy, the Scottish Government has prioritised ensuring men desist from all forms of violence against women and girls and perpetrators of such violence receive a robust and effective response. This violence includes the violence perpetrated by men in relation to acts of commercial sexual exploitation, of which prostitution is one aspect.

They held a consultation in 2020 on approaches to challenge men’s demand for prostitution, continue to support work to reduce the harms associated with commercial sexual exploitation and help women to exit prostitution.

This is an issue which has been debated in Scotland for many years.  We believe this is now the time for action.  As an Alliance we are asking the Scottish Government to act and we invite you to join us.

‘Into the Arms of Traffickers’ is the launch of new research by Christine Beddoe, freelance consultant and former Director of ECPAT UK, with the collaboration of Garden Court Chambers, MiCLU and young people from Shpresa Programme.

The research examines the experiences and views of young Albanian asylum-seeking children in the UK as well as key professionals who work with them, and finds that the result of increasing Home Office delays is that highly vulnerable children and young adults are facing greater risk of exploitation and trafficking within the UK, specifically to labour exploitation and criminal exploitation. The system is in effect pushing children into the arms of traffickers. As a consequence, the UK government is failing in its legal obligations to protect the victims and potential victims of trafficking.

The research is part of a wider project: Breaking the Chains, a partnership project dedicated to improving outcomes for Albanian children and young people seeking asylum in the UK. You can register online on Eventbrite until 18 October.

The Photography Exhibition’ will highlight the perspectives and lives of those affected by modern slavery. Throughout the summer of 2021, Flourish held a 10 week Photography Course so survivors could capture photos they felt represented themselves and their lives now in Northern Ireland. From composing and capturing to editing and printing, the participants have developed their own photographic practice in order to share with you their final collection now displayed at this exhibition.

On Anti Slavery Day the exhibition will be open for viewing across 30 minute viewing slots at the Merchant Hotel, Belfast to give you space to view and reflect on the work of participants. To book your viewing slot please click here.

At this event they will look at our new strategy, the local picture of Modern Slavery and hear examples of some of our key partner's work with survivors providing a coordinated community responses. The UK BME Anti Slavery Network (BASNET) is an expert dialogue on policies, implementations and the dynamics of Modern Slavery across Africa.

The dialogue will bring together Government representatives from the African Union, North Africa (Ethiopia), East Africa (Kenya) and West Africa (Nigeria and Ghana) to review Government policies and implementation approach towards ending Modern Slavery. Register here.
