Meghan Trainor & Mike Sabath’s “Wave” Is Electro-Pop Perfection

UPDATE: Meghan Trainor and Mike Sabath get lost in a sea of human bodies in the “Wave” video. Check out the newly released, Matthew Cullen-directed project below.

Meghan Trainor’s work ethic is seriously next level. The 25-year-old has to be one of the busiest divas in pop. This year alone she’s rolled out no shortage of high-quality bops. That includes a mega-romantic EP, a couple soundtrack contributions, collabs and a solo floor-filler or two. Earlier this week the “Genetics” hitmaker came through with a serotonin-raising cover of “I’ll Be There For You.” Today (September 27), she joins the New Music Friday lineup with her second track in less than seven days – “Wave.” Her latest finds her joining forces with rising star Mike Sabath.

And it may be my favorite song she’s dropped this year. On it, the duo rides the waves of their love story. “I want what I can’t have. Still holding on to hope. Drowning in my tears. This love’s a sinking boat,” Meghan sings. However, instead of moving on, she welcomes the hurricane of emotion. “Just take me like a wave. Pull me back and forth,” she pleads over a frothy production. “Crash into my arms. Tell me I am yours.” Meanwhile, Mike plays the role of the repentant partner begging for a second chance. “‘Cause I miss the way you’re dancing on me,” he admits. “Let me pull you back in.”

The end result feels more mature and graceful than some of Meghan’s more saccharine bops, and I’m loving this creative direction for her. “Wave” is expected to land on her forthcoming album Treat Myself. And if it is indicative of the quality of material on the LP, then I’m very excited to hear more. Give it a listen below and let us know if you agree.
