Inter­national Cultural Relations Research Alliance (ICRRA)

The International Cultural Relations Research Alliance (ICRRA) is a network of institutions, academics and practitioners in the field of international cultural relations. ICRRA sees itself as a bridge builder between practical cultural work, scholarly reflection and policy advice. The aims of the network are to transfer international research-based knowledge to policymakers and society and to promote the exchange of knowledge and cooperation in cultural relations. ICRRA organises regular networking meetings, workshops and conferences on basic issues in the field of international cultural relations. In particular, the network promotes knowledge transfer from the Global South.

In this way, ICRRA aims, on the one hand, to create a digital forum for international and publicly accessible discussion at a time when the concept of  ‘culture' is increasingly moving towards the centre of political debate worldwide. On the other hand, ICRRA focuses on institutionalising and consolidating the theoretical discussion between actors in the field of international cultural relations. The ifa Repository presents freely-available research literature, supplemented by brief non-academic texts.

The ICRRA Network was established by the British Council and ifa in 2019.

Join ICRRA

Criteria

ICRRA is a network of researchers and practitioners. It promotes research-based knowledge exchange and discussion on international cultural relations. ICRRA is neither a political association nor a political or government authority; ICRRA neither advocates a particular political programme nor a particular direction. The network supports the exchange, dissemination and discussion of academic and ethical research and strategic work for the public good. Membership is only possible upon application.

Requirements:

  • Work in a not-for-profit and politically independent research organisation or institution, for example, a university, research centre or public institution that deals with international cultural relations.
  • The application must be supported by an ICRRA member.

In accepting new members, the focus is on the Global South to ensure that it is adequately represented and that ICRRA reflects regional balance. Applicants who do not fulfil the requirements for membership may nevertheless be invited to attend ICRRA meetings and events as guests.

Expectations of members

ICRRA members must be open and transparent towards the suggestions, objectives and intentions of research of all kinds that is shared or published via the network, particularly the ifa Repository. All publications must carry the statement that ICRRA research is in the public interest and does not pursue any commercial or political objectives. In addition, in their role as members of the network, members commit themselves to the highest ethical and integrity standards.

It is expected that members contribute actively to the development of the network through engaging in some or all of the following activities:

  • Identifying potential candidates for membership, particularly from regions of the world currently underrepresented in the network, including the Global South
  • Recommending research results for inclusion in the ifa Repository or depositing them there,
  • Providing and/or checking English translations of abstracts or summaries of research results by other researchers written in languages other than English that have been proposed for inclusion in the ifa Research Repository,
  • Supporting the network with the programme development, organisation and implementation of the annual ICRRA Conference,
  • Providing the Steering Committee with feedback and advice for further developing the network (by e-mail and personally at (online) network meetings),
  • Exchanging relevant research news, results and opportunities with other members (by e-mail and/or via other digital platforms developed by ICRRA for this purpose).

Members must inform the Steering Committee of any interests or other obligations that may conflict with ICRRA’s objectives and statement of intent. If, in the view of the Steering Committee, a member’s activities or interests conflict with or undermine ICRRA’s objectives or statement of intent, or deviate from its high ethical and integrity standards, membership will be withdrawn.
