Story
My name is Stuart McOwan, a paramedic, and I had a Total Left Hip replacement in November 2021. Following my operation with consent from my consultant, The Ambulance Staff Charity (TASC) organised for me to attend the Police Rehabilitation Centre in Auchterarder. I work for the Scottish Ambulance Service at the East SORT (special operations response team) base, and was desperate to get back to full duties. I was concerned that I may not be able to do my job to full capabilities. I have always been involved in sports and believed my chances of taking part in events was unlikely or impossible after such an operation.
On arrival, I was assigned a physio who listened to my story and was extremely helpful and confident that I was not on the scrap heap yet!
I tentatively mentioned I would love to run again (which I thought I would be told off for!), and this came as no surprise to her and she put together a programme for me , which along side rehabilitation exercises, included an anti-gravity treadmill, which had been designed by NASA!
The whole experience enhanced not only my physical well being , but gave the confidence, that if I took my time and followed the advice, along with caring for patients, I could in fact, hope to do another triathlon.
This, in hand with the support of my line manager, allowed me get back to my full range of duties, providing patient care, while also building my fitness.
I have decided to take on the challenge of the Aberfeldy Middle Distance Triathlon on 20th August 2023, which is a half ironman distance, comprising of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile cycle and 13.1 mile run.
I am hoping to raise money for TASC as without them I would not be in this position to take on this challenge. To give something back, which hopefully will help colleagues in the Ambulance Service receiving the help I was so lucky to have.
I would like to take this chance to thank TASC, the Police Rehabilitation Centre and SORT for all their support, my family and particularly my partner Dawn for putting up with me after operation! And you all should you decide to contribute to such a worth while cause.
Below is a paragraph from TASC outlining who they are and what the do.
Thank you again for taking the time to read this and hope you can donate!
Cheers
Stu
