Workshop 1: Working together – the power of advocacy and collaboration across researchers, policymakers and practitioners in the field of alcohol

Advocacy skills are essential for the public health researchers and practitioners to potentially influence policy- and decision-making processes for better alcohol-related policy and practice. Those skills are important especially in those public health areas where so-called »unhealthy« industries are influential and/or (at least) want to be important stakeholders in the field (such as alcohol industry).

The aim of the workshop is to provide knowledge and strengthen advocacy skills and to increase the competencies of experts and, consequently, their impact on policy- and decision-making processes and effective interventions based on scientific evidence. The workshop includes some interactive activities, such as group work, discussion, and Q&A.

Outcomes include:

  • an increased competence for advocacy such as forging stronger relationships with policy- and decision-makers,
  • advocating for the use of research to inform policy- and decision-makers about evidence-based policy and practice,
  • providing expert testimony, writing position papers, press releases and social media posts,
  • increasing the visibility and recognition of evidence-based policy and practice, and
  • committing to ongoing advocacy.

 Structure of the workshop:

  • Short introduction of the workshop,
  • Advocacy for evidence-based alcohol policy and practice: definitions, aims and objectives,
  • Policy cycle and decision-making process (how to influence it),
  • Coalition building / developing effective coalitions (group work),
  • Making the case for evidence-based alcohol policy and practice with media advocacy,
  • Developing effective advocacy plan (group work),
  • Questions and discussion.

Target group: Scientists, researchers, and practitioners in the field of alcohol (open to all KBS participants)

Number of expected participants: 25

Time: 04 June 2023 at 13h00-16h00

Workshop 2: 2023 GENACIS-GENAHTO-IGSAHO Workshop

This year the format of the Gender Alcohol and Culture - an international study (GENACIS), Gender and Alcohol’s Harm to Others (GENAHTO) and the International Group for the Study of Alcohol’s Harm to Others (IGSAHO) workshop will focus on updates from each country and discussion of research gaps in 1) alcohol, gender, culture and harm, 2) alcohol’s harm to others and 3) men’s drinking and its impacts on women and children.

Cross-national syntheses focusing on quantitative datasets, qualitative understandings and policies remain underdeveloped. For example, the GENACIS, GENAHTO and DEEP-SEAS (European data) archives still hold data with the potential to resolve unanswered research questions. Additionally, the data sets can be used for testing methodological techniques involving alcohol use and harm measures.

We are soliciting ideas on potential cross-national gender- and AHTO-related papers still to be written and ideas about cross-national work that might be funded in the future. We look forward to workshopping these ideas together in Johannesburg.

Target group: All KBS participants welcome. New, past and ongoing GENACIS, GENAHTO and IGSAHO researchers especially welcome to attend and unite/reunite.

Number of expected participants: 10-30

RSVP to attend the workshop: Yes to  by 21 May 2023

Workshop 3: International Confederation of Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Research Associations (ICARA)

ICARA is an international, nongovernmental, multidisciplinary and civil society organization bringing together ATOD societies to promote, support and enhance ATOD science locally and globally.

This workshop’s aim is to discuss Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs (ATOD) research capacity strengthening needs in LMIC countries, as well as developing potential research partnerships with researchers from these countries. We welcome all researchers (early career and well-established) based in the global South. The organisers of the workshop’s starting point is to build on the existing research capacity and expertise among workshop attendees from the Global South and discuss ways to address research capacity needs identified by participants, using all the assets we already have. Attendees will be split into smaller groups by region and discussions will focus on the following areas:

  • What areas of ATOD research have been done well in your country/region so far?
  • What types of ATOD research are priorities in your country/region today?
  • What are the main ATOD research areas where there is a gap now?
  • What are the main challenges in undertaking ATOD research?
  • What are your specific needs for undertaking this research both locally and internationally?
  • How do you think ICARA could support those needs?
  • What kinds of research partnerships would be interested in fostering with other LMIC researchers, if any?

Facilitators will make notes of all identified strengths, gaps and needs for each region and a whole-group discussion will take place where together we will start to group these needs according to commonalities (themes). The next steps for strengthening research capacity needs will then be agreed on by the whole group, and the potential role of ICARA in supporting these needs will be identified

Target group: Researchers from low- to middle-income (LMIC) countries

Number of expected participants: 25

RSVP to attend the workshop: No

Workshop 4: How to inform policy- and decision-makers about evidence-based alcohol prevention policy and practice (introduction to advocacy)

Advocacy skills are essential for the public health researchers and practitioners to potentially influence policy- and decision-making processes for better alcohol-related policy and practice. The aim of the workshop is to present the importance of advocacy for positive changes in alcohol policy and practice and to highlight the very important role of scientists and researchers in processes of influencing policy decisions. The workshop will provide some basic knowledge and strengthen advocacy skills of experts and, consequently, their impact on policy- and decision-making processes and effective interventions based on scientific evidence. Researchers and practitioners need to become more relevant to policy- and decision-makers, and a workshop focuses on that aim.

Target group: Scientists, researchers, and practitioners in the field of alcohol (open to all KBS participants)

Number of expected participants: 25

Time: 06 June 2023 at 12h30 - 14h00
