Students in San Joaquin County can now tour the region's history safely during the coronavirus pandemic after the museum in Micke Grove uploaded its lessons online. Restrictions caused by COVID-19 forced many businesses, including museums, to close as a way to halt the spread. With at-home learning, the concept of touring museums virtually vanished.The San Joaquin Historical Museum in Micke Grove Park sought to change that after a partnership with teachers and local organizations enabled them to give online history lessons, or what they call "digital journeys."Students can now venture through the founding of the City of Stockton and other major milestones in the county's past through the comfort of their home.Phillip Merlo is the director of education and visitor services for the San Joaquin County Historical Society & Museum. He said lessons are free and open to anybody who wants to learn."So what this website is, is it's really a digital museum with interactive activities for students and general audiences to learn more about the world they call home while still engaging with state standards of social studies that they are required to learn about in school," Merlo said.The museum is home to several types of historical nuggets, including how at one point in time, there were more Filipinos in Stockton than anywhere else outside of the Philippines. The caterpillar tractor, a staple to most construction jobs, was also created in Stockton, according to the museum's archives.
