Co-designed with employers and aligned to the National Youth Agency Validation Requirements (2022), the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship in Youth Work Leeds Beckett is the first to be fully validated for a university in England.

We help develop confident, creative and resilient professionals, ready to take on new challenges and meet the needs of a diverse range of young people. Apprentices will be on campus for their ‘off the job learning’ (the equivalent of six hours), supported by a teaching team of qualified youth workers. Lessons will be a mixture of taught face-to-face lectures, seminars and workshops that allow apprentices to develop an understanding of best practice in the field.

Gaining valuable practical experience is at the heart of the course and each year includes a placement module, supported by university tutors, allowing apprentices the opportunity to engage with different communities and gain new perspectives.

At the end of the three-years, apprentices will undertake an End Point Assessment (EPA). This brings together all their learning and demonstrates how they meet the standards of a qualified youth worker. Following successfully completion, apprentices become qualified youth and community workers, as recognised by the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC), ready to progress their career and take on a leadership role, either as an Advanced Practitioner or Manager.

Essential information

The course is expected to take three years to complete and includes a variety of practice experiences and assessments, combined with academic studies designed to complement and underpin the apprentice’s practical learning. Learners are encouraged to critically reflect upon their developing practice and relate this to professional, legal and ethical frameworks.

We understand that apprentices will have individual talents and interests. We are very experienced in providing high levels of personalised student support and guidance that will address their individual learning needs and enable them to meet their full potential. All youth work apprentices will have an Academic Advisor/Personal Tutor who supports them throughout the course, providing an opportunity to discuss academic progress and assessment feedback throughout the course.

The majority of teaching takes place from City Campus. Students have full access to university facilities throughout their studies.

Youth work apprentices are taught by qualified youth workers with teaching and research expertise, as well as experience of working with diverse groups. They will also be supported by a Degree Apprenticeship Assessor, a member of Leeds Beckett staff whose role is to meet learners regularly, offer any additional support where needed and help them to reflect on and progress learning, both in the workplace and in their studies. Our enthusiastic, friendly and approachable team are committed to providing students with a supportive learning environment.

UCAS Tariff Points: 104 points. Minimum 64 points from two A levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies.

GCSEs: English Language and Mathematics Grade 4 or above, or equivalent examinations.

Satisfactory DBS check (Employer to undertake this).

Our university welcomes applications from those who demonstrate academic potential. If you do not have any formal qualifications, we may be able to use learning gained from work experience instead. If this is the case, we will work with you to collect this information and assess if we are able to use it.

Further information on this, and general apprentice admissions requirements, may be sought from the Apprenticeships Team by email at apprenticeships@leedsbeckett.ac.uk

Please note applications are submitted through the relevant employer, not directly from applicants.

Before starting an apprenticeship, applicants and employer representatives will be required to sign a 'Training Plan' and 'Apprenticeship Agreement' before they can begin the programme. The 'Training Plan' is a shared agreement between Leeds Beckett University, the employer and the apprentice which details information regarding the apprenticeship such as planned content and schedule for training and what is expected and offered by the employer, the training provider, and the apprentice. The 'Apprenticeship Agreement' contains details about employment arrangements, working conditions, and the programme information.
