The 2024 #Biodiversity #Genomics #Europe Barcoding Hackathon video is released! 🧬 The BGE Barcoding Hackathon, hosted from 23-25 April in Leiden, the Netherlands, and coordinated by Naturalis Biodiversity Center Nederland, aimed to improve the digital infrastructure and practices supporting the single barcoding workflow stream of the BGE project. But what is a hackathon, actually? And why is it so important? 💡 Rutger Vos, BGE’s Barcoding Data and Data Infrastructure pillar leader from Naturalis Biodiversity Center, explains: “There are many different types of hackathons, but what we do is bring together researchers, developers and bioinformaticians who are normally spread out across the BGE project in different tasks and work packages. Six projects selected for BGE BIOSCAN funding! Last November, BGE opened a funding call for projects contributing to the development of DNA-barcoding reference libraries for species in Europe. Our evaluation committee has selected six projects that best met the expectations of the call. 🧬 More than seventy applications were received, exceeding our expectations, and demonstrating great interest for DNA-barcode reference library development across Europe. Identifying bees is now easier! DNA barcodes are short sequences of genetic material that allow us to distinguish species, just as barcodes allow us to distinguish products in supermarkets. “Today, I believe DNA barcoding is humanity’s first shot at finally discovering all life on Earth”, says Paul Hebert, Director of the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics (University of Guelph) and scientific director of the International Barcode of Life. 🧬 “The most common estimate is that we share this planet with 8.7m species, but I believe there are far more – somewhere between 20m and 40m. Since its debut in my back yard, this technique has helped conservationists to combat wildlife crime and monitor the impact of mining on biodiversity. Our colleagues from the Hungarian Natural History Museum, partner of #BGE, presented BGE’s hamster case study at the “3rd Annual Meeting of the Hungarian Mammalogists: Conference and Workshop” in Eger, Hungary. Important, as hamsters are endangered in most parts of Europe. Furthermore, in the workshop devoted to Species Conservation Action Plans, valuable insights were given into how genetic studies contribute to the long-term conservation of the hamster and the integration of this knowledge into action plans.
