Unprecedented challenges call for unprecedented solutions. The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping was established four years ago with a few brave founding partners onboard. Today, our partner portfolio has over 100 dedicated companies and organizations committed to the shared mission to decarbonize the maritime industry. It is a complex challenge that requires cross-sectoral action, new technologies, updated regulations, new business frameworks, and fundamental changes to the way we operate across the maritime ecosystem. Overwhelming? Sometimes. Impossible? Never. Not with partners like ours. They come together from different fields of expertise, backgrounds, and countries because they know that the future of shipping depends on collaboration and collective responsibility. This week, we are gathering at our annual Accelerate Partner Summit in Copenhagen to connect, collaborate, share knowledge, and take steps on the path of change. We are thrilled to see more than 400 attendees joining hands to lead the journey towards a green transition. Together, we show the world it is possible. ''The transition is a journey, not just a destination. Four years ago, we hardly knew that there was a pathway to zero carbon shipping. While container and passenger ships have until January 2030 to comply with the requirement to use OPS or an alternative zero-emissions technology, it can be advantageous to utilize OPS to meet yearly GHG intensity targets. FuelEU's pooling mechanism has the potential to drive green shipping by allowing vessels exceeding GHG intensity targets to share their compliance surplus with others. By monetizing this surplus, companies can bridge the cost gap between alternative and fossil fuels. We are launching the Fuel Cost Calculator! With the Fuel Cost Calculator, you will be able to calculate the bottom-up production cost of sustainable fuels and benchmark them against fossil fuels. Now we are taking it to the next level. RMI and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping will collaborate with the The Aspen Institute's Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) and Hapag-Lloyd AG to pilot a Maritime Book and Claim System for tracking and decoupling greenhouse gas emissions from ocean transport services. This collaboration represents a momentous step in shipping decarbonization, leveraging cargo owners’ purchasing power to advance low-emissions ocean transportation solutions in a transparent, credible manner. “Market-based interventions such as book and claim are a powerful decarbonization tool, especially in the early stages of establishing a differentiated market,” said Aparajit Pandey, principal and shipping decarbonization lead at RMI. ZEMBA’s inaugural tender process demonstrates that cargo owners are willing to pay more for premium, zero-emissions shipping services, but are struggling to access those fuels at the scale required for commercial deployment. The Maritime Book and Claim System links this demand signal with a credible and transparent chain of custody model. By decoupling fuel attributes from the physical value chain, book and claim enables transactions of a digitalized version. "The collaboration with ZEMBA further strengthens the development of a global Maritime Book and Claim System and underlines how important such a system will be to overcome obstacles to accelerate the adoption of low-emissions fuels at scale,” said Frederik Jacobsen, project manager at the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. IMO Member States take important step towards increased convergence on the development of the mid-term measures — sending the International Maritime Organization in a promising direction to approve robust and ambitious regulations in 2025.   It is evident that the maritime community is making significant strides towards a sustainable future. The groundwork laid during the landmark consensus reached at MEPC 80 in July 2023 has paved the way for constructive dialogues and tangible progress in the MEPC 81 meeting that finished today, Friday.   At the forefront of these discussions is the Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) framework, a crucial tool ensuring that IMO measures are anchored on a solid foundation from production to consumption. MEPC 81 marks the initiation of multiple workstreams, including the formation of new correspondence groups and a technical working group, where the Member States will address some of the remaining aspects of the IMO LCA Framework. The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping's advocacy for a certification framework for fuels has been instrumental, sparking discussions that are vital for advancing sustainably.   On the mid-term measures, the consensus on the necessity of a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Fuel Standard is a testament of the organization's collective commitment to deliver on the needed regulations. While nuances regarding its scope and implementation persist, the baseline framework established during MEPC 81, the so-called "IMO net-zero framework", sets the stage for further deliberations, fostering a shared understanding among stakeholders. The next MEPC meetings will be crucial to ensure convergence on such important measures.   Progress on short-term measures, such as the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), underscores our dedication to enhancing operational efficiency. The adoption of a more detailed Data Collection System (DCS) reflects our proactive approach to leveraging data for informed decision-making. During MEPC 81, a presentation was shared by our colleague Octavi Sadó Garriga, highlighting the importance of a robust data foundation in shaping effective regulations and how we are working towards finding solutions for improving the Carbon Intensity Indicator, reinforcing our commitment to driving positive change.   As we applaud the progress made by Member States, it is crucial to maintain momentum and collectively build a robust regulatory framework that steers us towards a sustainable transition. It is a first important step – but still a lot remains to do. Bridging the gap between different country positions will demand a lot of efforts within a very limited amount of time. Together, we can navigate the complexities of decarbonizing the shipping industry and chart a course towards a greener future. #ZeroCarbonShipping
