🌟 Norway is setting the bar high in beverage container recovery and recycling, with a deposit return system (DRS) boasting a 92% return rate and less than 1% littered. How do they do it? An approach we call Clean Loop Recycling ♻️ By returning beverage containers to reverse vending machines via DRS, the containers maintain their quality, enabling them to be recycled into new containers again and again. Tackling plastic pollution requires a global effort 🌏 The recent INC-4 session saw global leaders, stakeholders, and experts get together in Canada to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution. While there's optimism for progress, there are still challenges that must solved. Here is a short breakdown of the key highlights: 📈 Progress: Key proposals have been made regarding restrictions and phase-outs, product design for reuse and recycling, and extended producer responsibility (EPR). ✅ Agreements: There is a high level of alignment on the importance of enhancing waste management and establishing financing mechanisms. 💡 Opportunities: The formal intersessional work offers a chance for further progress. Despite these strides, there are still uncertainties regarding treaty adoption and negotiation pace. As we move forward in the fight against plastic pollution, it's important to progress with specific definitions and concrete targets, particularly in areas of strong alignment like waste management. We call on governments around the world to seize this opportunity and acknowledge their role. The verdict is in: a unified deposit return scheme #DRS #DRS across the devolved nations in the UK is favored by 60% of respondents in our recent survey. According to UK’s Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs, across the UK, consumers purchase an estimated 31 billion single-use drinks containers each year – 12 billion plastic drinks bottles, 14 billion drinks cans. A significant amount of these containers ends up littered or in landfills. "Public opinion and environmental concerns strongly support the deposit return scheme, signaling a widespread demand for action. As we face issues like litter, climate change, and sustainability, it's obvious that we need significant changes now.
