Agriculture's pests, including insects, rodents, fungi and unwanted plants, are a worldwide problem to crop production. The typical chemical compounds used to kill these pests - pesticides - are damaging ecosystems as they are a major source of pollution, contaminating water, soil and air, driving biodiversity loss, and leading to pest resistance. But there is a small mammal that can help! The hedgehog is a unique species of the European fauna, with part of its body covered in spines, which feeds mainly on invertebrates, some of which are agricultural pests and disease vectors. Therefore, its presence in vegetable gardens is a good sign and contributes to a more sustainable food system! To help these garden animals, you can build a shelter that can be used during hibernation, daytime rest or for the hedgehog parents to use as a nest. You can also build a footprint tunnel to check their presence in your green spaces! 🌱 Exciting News from FoodShift Pathways! 🌱 🌟Last week our partners from Sweden participated in an event hosted by the Center of Nutrition at Karolinska Institutet. During the event, Ioannis Ioakeimidis took stage to shed light on the impactful work within our school projects. 🏫 At FoodShift, we believe that education is the key to reshaping our food systems, fostering a healthier and more sustainable world. In Sweden students are provided with digital tools such as smartphone applications to become citizen scientists to collect data on their own food environment.
