Governments around the world are integrating electric buses into public transportation by offering support through policies and incentives. Will operating e-buses prove to be sustainable will largely depend on battery performance and its lifespan. The EV battery lifespan is affected by external stress factors such as temperature, state of charge (SoC), depth of discharge (DoD), and charging rate (C-rate). Battery degradation leads to a loss of capacity over time, both when the vehicle is not in use (calendar aging) and during charging and discharging (cycle aging). In a #WRIIndia Working Paper titled 'Real-world Electric Bus Operation: Trend in Technology, Performance, Degradation and Lifespan of Batteries' Parveen Kumar, PhD, Pawan Mulukutla and Priyansh Doshi, identify the best scenarios for optimal battery life in e-bus operations in the Indian context. They also suggest ways to improve battery life, in e-buses, by collecting real-world local data and optimizing how e-buses are used, both in India and globally. Air pollution is one of the leading environmental health risks globally. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that air pollution is responsible for 7 million premature deaths worldwide while a study co-conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research revealed that air pollution in India resulted in a staggering 1.67 million deaths in 2019. Air pollution is often not visible as polluting particles like PM2.5 are way too small to be seen by the naked eye and besides impacting our health, air pollution also affects crop production, disrupts rainfall patterns and contributes to global warming. #KnowYourAir #AirQuality #AirWeShare #AirPollution #CleanAirForAll #TogetherForCleanAir #AirPollutionAwareness Bhavay Sharma | Prakash Doraiswamy | Prayash Giria

India has made significant progress in electrifying its public bus fleet. With close to 8,000 electric buses already in operation, India aims to expedite the shift to electric mobility by deploying 50,000 e-buses by 2027 and phasing out 800,000 diesel buses over the next 8-10 years. The PM e-bus Sewa Scheme, which aims to introduce 10,000 e-buses on city routes nationwide, is a crucial step towards setting the stage for global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in transportation. However, realizing this transition requires a comprehensive strategy, including privatizing city bus services, establishing organized bus networks in smaller cities, promoting electric vehicle adoption, enhancing urban mobility, transitioning to electric-powered city transport, and optimizing costs in urban transportation systems. In this article in Hindustan Times, Dr. O.P. Agarwal and Pawan Mulukutla delve into potential approaches to ensure efficient e-bus operations. “Inadequate safety elements, and unscientific design of road infrastructure, increases the likelihood of vehicular and pedestrian conflicts leading to crashes and fatalities. Civic authorities must consider holistic road safety measures,” points out Chetan Sodaye. Road safety measures such as improving road signage, enhancing pedestrian infrastructure with marked crossings and refuge islands, and deploying speed calming devices like speed humps and raised intersections make streets safer by design for all – especially for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. Incorporating policies that allow design consultants to take up such projects, and implementing these measures, at the right locations, is key! WRI India is supporting two initiatives in Bengaluru that follows these principles - ➡ #NammaRaste, an initiative by BBMP, that looks at designing climate resilient and safe streets: https://shorturl.at/ouKX7 ➡ #Suraksha75, initiated by BBMP and BTP, aims to redesign 75 high risk junctions: https://lnkd.in/gCNpycZG 📖 Read why Bengaluru roads need safety upgrades in the Bangalore Mirror here: https://lnkd.in/gCBvWSqM #SaferbyDesign #WRIRoadSafety #SaferByDesign #ClimateResilience #UrbanDesign #Sustainability #CityPlanning #ClimateAction
