HOW IT STARTED
THE PROBLEM

Scuba diving and filming a brittle star bed off the Dorset coast was very difficult due to managing the strong current while trying to stabilise the video camera and lighting rig.

There also needed to be a suitable distance at all times between the diver and a sea bed writhing with brittle star arms.

The resulting video was poor in quality making it difficult to study the marine life.

THE SOLUTION

Mount a surveillance video camera in a sub sea housing, attach it to a down facing tripod and connect to the surface using an Ethernet cable.

The camera can now be controlled from the safety of a boat using a portable computer.

This is the first film produced using this method and an early prototype camera system nicknamed “SharkCam”

The objective of MarineSee is to develop remote underwater video camera systems to aid marine conservation and public engagement.
