17th Century Artefacts Discovered At Westmeath Building Site

The finds offer a glimpse into the life of a 17th century soldier.

A number of artefacts dating back to the 17th century have been discovered at a building site in Westmeath.

Archaeologists working at the new Garda Station on Barrack Street in Athlone have unearthed the finds amidst a perfectly preserved cobbled area and courtyard surface.

OPW Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran says the items offer a fascinating glimpse into the life of the first soldiers stationed at the former Victoria Barracks in approximately 1690.

Archaeologist Angela Wallace says they found coins, musket balls, a hair comb, glassware and military buttons - along with animal remains:
