World Symposium on Climate Change Policies: Science and Technology in Support of Policy-Making in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Online

To submit an abstract or register contact info@iccip.net

Join researchers, decision-makers, educators, members of non-governmental organisations and citizens to explore how science and technology may contribute towards supporting the design and implementation of climate change policies.

The free event will be held on Tuesday 19 September 2023 online. There are no CO2 emissions from travel associated with the meeting.

Background
Climate change policies are important tools in supporting legislative and executive approaches to promote conditions for assertive action to advances the climate agenda. Sound policies are essential for the implementation of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Although climate change policies are a vital component for the implementation of climate action, including the implementation of SDG13, there is a perceived need to have in-depth discussions on how best they may be designed and implemented.

Against this background, the UK Consortium on Sustainability Research (UK-CSR), the Ecology and Environment Research Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University, the Research and Transfer Centre ‘Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management’ at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, and the International Climate Change Information and Research Programme, in cooperation with various universities and research organisations, are organising the ‘World Symposium on Climate Change Policies: Science and Technology in Support of Policy-Making in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation’. The event will be held online on 19 September 2023.

Aims of the event
The main aim of the symposium is to provide a platform for discussions on the role of science and technology in support of policymaking on climate change. In addition, the Symposium aims to identify, document and disseminate ideas, experiences and visions from scientists, decision-makers, educators, members of non-governmental organisations, and citizens, on how science and technology may contribute towards supporting the design and implementation of climate change policies, which is important in pursuing sustainable future scenarios. The outcome of the discussions will be summarised, and fed in the preparations for COP 28, to be held in Dubai on 30 November – 12 December 2023.

Structure
The Symposium will gather delegates interested in aspects of policy-making and/or policy implementation on climate change.

Target groups
The symposium will be of special interest to experts working in the science-technology nexus and policymaking on matters related to climate change. It will also be interesting to educators and practitioners. To maximise the impact of the event, it will gather climate scientists generating climate data, and working on mitigation and adaptation strategies on the one hand and organisations working in policy design and policy implementation on the other. These two groups do not often come together. No matter if delegates come from academia, government agencies or think thanks, the symposium will provide them with an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas and information.

Documentation of the symposium
As an output and long-term documentation of the event, selected papers will be published in the book Climate Change Policies: Science and Technology in Support of Policy-Making in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, which will follow on the success of the Handbook of Climate Change Resilience and Handbook of Climate Change Management which, with six volumes and over 500 authors, is one of the largest non-publicly funded editorial projects on climate change ever undertaken. The book will be published as part of the Climate Change Management Series, which is the leading peer-reviewed book series on matters related to climate change. Over 3.000 authors from across all geographical regions have contributed to the series to date. The peer-reviewed nature of the series, which is fully indexed, means that publications have counted over the years for promotion and tenure purposes.

Abstracts now welcome
We are now calling for abstracts, which consist of a 200-word outline of the paper, along with the names and full contact details of the authors.
Abstracts should be sent to the coordinating team at: info@iccip.net.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 30 May 2023. Full papers are due by 30 August 2023.
Further details will be discussed with the authors whose abstracts have been accepted.

Registration
If you are interested in attending the Symposium, please contact the coordinating team at: info@iccip.net.
