Slow cooker kits to be delivered across the borough

Around 60 slow cooker kits will be distributed to households with vulnerable members across Mid and East Antrim over the coming days.

The Slow Cooker kits scheme has been developed by Council and the Northern Healthy Lifestyles Partnership, funded by the Northern Health & Social Care Trust and the Public Health Agency and supported by Henderson Retail.

Benefiting households identified by Council through the Community Hub will receive a kit which will include:

  • A slow cooker
  • Cookbook
  • Box of store cupboard basics
  • Chopping board
  • Recipe Ingredients for up to two meals

It is hoped this will provide a more sustainable option for shielding households to make nutritious food.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Maureen Morrow, said: “This fantastic new scheme is perfect for those vulnerable people who are self-isolating but still want to prepare healthy, nutritious meals for their family."

Deputy Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Beth Adger, added: “The council is committed to supporting people through these unprecedented challenges and we’ll do everything in our power to help.

“We’ve already been delivering thousands of food parcels across the borough to those in our care and families who are struggling to cope.

“These supplies are not a short-term fix – we will make sure they continue for as long as they are needed.”

Slow cookers are simple to use, require little food preparation time and make nutritious food on a budget.

The cookbook provided will have some handy hints and tips on getting the most from the slow cooker for families and should provide at least four portions.
