The MSc in Physical Activity and Health offers a comprehensive understanding of physical activity and exercise, and their role in enhancing health, physical function, and performance. You will learn about scientific principles that govern physical activity and physical function, and how to enhance these in various contexts. Specifically, you will learn how to optimize health, performance, and function through strength and endurance training, and how this influences physiological functioning and movement techniques. Practical experience in conducting movement analyses and physiological tests in our laboratories, as well as in the field using portable technology, is also part of the program.

So-called life-style diseases have been increasing massively all over the world in the last decades and are still on the rise. In addition, the population keeps getting older, demanding that workers can maintain their work ability longer, and that people in stay healthier as they age. Hence, knowledge and skills within the area of physical activity and health is highly relevant and of increasing importance in all countries and societies, and in several fields.

Trondheim is known as the most popular student city in Norway and has a lot to offer in terms of recreation, sports, and culture. Being a mid-sized city, most offers are within walking distance from the campus. The student population makes out approximately a fifth of the total population in Trondheim, leaving a young and positive mark on the city.

The MSc in Physical Activity and Health is a two-year, full-time (120 ECTS credits) programme starting in the autumn semester (mid-August). The first year of the master’s contains eight courses (of 7.5 ECTS credits each, totalling 60 ECTS credits) while the whole second year is devoted to the master's thesis (60 ECTS credits).

The first semester consists of four compulsory courses common for both specializations. 

The second semester consists of one elective course and three compulsory courses.

The third and fourth semesters are devoted to thesis work.

There are 40 places at the MSc in Physical Activity and Health. Each specialization has 20 places (Exercise Physiology and Movement Science). You apply directly to the specialization you want to take. It is possible to apply to both specializations.

Application deadlines

  • Non-EU/non-EEA students: 1 December
  • EU/EEA/Swiss students: 1 March
  • Norwegian/Nordic students: 15 April

Tuition fees

Tuition fees will be charged international students with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, based on categories. The Master's programme in Physical Activity and Health is category D.
